Did you sign a lease or an application?

If you have an executed lease (signed by both sides) they cannot back out of their end of the arrangement- they are responsible for providing you the place to stay.

Don’t let them brush you off – but if you came and collected your damage deposits and signed off on that you might have already canceled the contract depending on what they had you sign.

If it is a signed lease, you may be able to seek damages through the RTDRS. Keep in mind awards from RTDRS are never what people hope for or expect. You should keep all receipts for actual costs incurred because of this and use it as evidence in the application. Also, keep track of efforts you are making to mitigate.

The landlord may also argue you acquiesced by taking back the damage deposit.

    Edit:

The most reasonable is to negotiate this with the landlord if possible rather than RTDRS. You may also be able to contact a legal clinic in your are for further advice or to write a letter to the landlord on your behalf.
