## Investing in ETFs on Sharesies: Smartshares US 500 vs. Vanguard S&P 500
I am considering investing my money into an ETF on Sharesies and am trying to decide between Smartshares US 500 and Vanguard S&P 500.
### Transaction and Management Fees Comparison
Upon comparing the two options, I have noticed that Vanguard has smaller transaction and management fees, which is making me lean towards this option. Additionally, I believe that Vanguard has more potential for growth in the long term.
### Popular Choice Among Kiwis
I have observed that many Kiwis on Reddit prefer Vanguard over Smartshares. However, despite this, Smartshares US 500 continues to be the top buy on Sharesies.

Any of these help? https://old.reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceNZ/search?q=smartshares+vanguard&restrict_sr=on&include_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all
Vanguard definitely IMO there was one etf smart shares offered and I had a look at the breakdown and was only all invested in a vanguard etf so make of that what you will. I do have the Australian top 20 smart shares but I’ve been a bit let down when looking through their breakdowns

I had the exact same question a year or so ago –
The advantage of the Smartshares ETF is that you buy in NZD and pay no FIF tax when selling.
If you buy Vanguard, you’ll pay in USD, and you’ll be subject to exchange rate fees and exchange rate fluctuations, which could really drag down your return.
If you tried to pull out of Vanguard just before 50,000, you’ll lose all the advantages of Dollar Cost Averaging as you now have a lump sum to invest elsewhere, which is going to incur even more fees, essentially meaning you’re going to double up on fees. It’s going to be stressful, and I bet you’ll wish you just kept it simple and invested in the Smartshares option.
