We do the homesteading bs, and the bees are probably the most expensive yet relaxing aspect of it. If you’re interested in it, I highly recommend finding someone to mentor you or attend bee classes before you start pissing money away.

I used to keep bees in langstroth hives until a dickhead neighbor poisoned the hives with round up. I want to get them again but do top bar hives instead.

Thanks for sharing this. I started raising my two hives last year and completed my first honey harvest recently. I’m looking forward to this year and seeing what my summer harvest will be. I’ve learned a lot and made some mistakes over the past year. If anyone is interested in beekeeping, learn the traditional method, don’t start out using a flowhive.

Where are the actual programs and grants for veterans to start a farm? Every 6 months I go through and try to find them and they do not exist. Every program links back to another website. The lady that use to be head of grants for veterans literally had it posted on her website that it wasn’t her job to show veterans the programs. Swords to plows use to be a program for veterans but the original organization and purpose doesnt exist anymore. Any programs available are for established businesses. When I use to do farm work I always heard there were 30 thousand dollar grants anyone could apply for as long as you had access to equipment and land. During the off season for big farms you can easily rent the unused land and grow a crop that the bigger farms don’t want to.

I’ve been learning and raising bees for 4 springs now. Started with 2 hives in horizontal Langstroth hives that I built from plans. Now, after the 5 swarms I caught this spring, I have 11 vertical lanstroth hives. I also raise scottish highland cattle and have been building an orchard over the last 14 years. Almost 50 trees of various ages now and starting to get fruit now. I have a day job as a data architect to help finance my farming adventures and expand into new areas on it.

Getting two NUCs next month. Super excited. Been working with a local beekeepers association and a mentor.

This is cool. How do I save this to find later

  • SuchAdvice2414

This is just weird. I bought a flo hive last month and I pick up my nuc this coming Saturday. To kee the cost low. Get on eBay and also Temu to buy things like the suit, feeders, smoker and other accessories. Now I’m just worried about whether the bees will accept their new home. Fixing to F around and find out.

I just started Heros to Hives. Michigan State’s free program to get apiarist certification for veterans and their dependents. It just started so anyone not signed up will have to wait until next year. At the end of the year it counts as one year of agricultural experience for USDA loans and such. I like it so far. There is a lot of videos and at the end is one exam with as many chances to take it as you need. I know one guy who’s gone through the program and he’s got two hives that he’ll be dividing up this spring.

This looked fun but the class is closed until next year
