## Decision Making on Insurance Policies for University Student

### Introduction
Good evening all,

I am a university student who engages in full-time food delivery during the summer break. As this activity falls under commercial use, I have secured a commercial car insurance policy to ensure adequate coverage.

### Current Situation
With the commencement of the new university term, my delivery driving will decrease significantly. Maintaining a commercial insurance policy under these circumstances may not be financially feasible.

### Exploring Options
I am considering downgrading to a personal insurance policy. However, I am aware that this move may lead to a lack of coverage for any accidents that occur during delivery driving.

### Seeking Clarity
My primary concern is whether engaging in delivery driving invalidates the policy entirely. I need assurance that if an accident occurs while driving to university, I would still be covered under the personal insurance policy.

Yes. You’ve made a false statement.

You better believe they will use any out they can. That one is a specific question they ask.

So Im also a delivery driver. My policy for commercial purposes is a whopping $7 more than personal.

    Time to get a broker…

  • Fickle-Classroom

The question they tend to ask is, is the *vehicle* used for business purposes. And if you answer no, that’s false. So policy can be voided on that basis.

You’ll also not be covered for any TP liability to peoples property caused by your car, so you really want to find a way to cover that at the very least.

Driving outside the permitted use specified in your insurance policy can indeed invalidate the entire policy and allow policy cancellations if discovered later. Eg a claim may not be accepted for an incident during private use.

Demonstrating a genuine reduction in commercial use through actions such as providing mileage estimates, telemetrics, and maintaining delivery records could be valuable to ensuring your policy reflects this mixed usage accurately. I think you could to ask them about “flexible usage” or “customized coverage” policies if you haven’t already. I’m not sure that’s the correct term for them however.

Ultimately though, insurers consider each case individually and may have specific requirements or procedures for adjusting policies. It’s essential to communicate openly with your insurer.

Yes. My friend crashed my car (which would now be worth 80k) about a decade ago on his restricted whilst I was in the car – insurance did not pay as he was invalidating the terms of his license

Ask them. Communication is always best and they will clarify your options. Likely if you disclose it is used for commercial purposes they will want to know how much commercial/personal split, the type, and then add an exclusion for those activities.

Also shop around because different insurers will have different tolerances.

It 100% does, as it 100% should.
