Supporting Local Businesses Benefits the Community

I was recently listening to the radio on my way to work and heard Paul Bunyan CommunicationsÔÇÖ ad encouraging us to ÔÇ£Love Local.ÔÇØ The push to love local ÔÇö started by the Bemidji Area Chamber of Commerce ÔÇö is to honor our locally-owned businesses and raise up the contributions they make to our community. The campaign is spot-on. As an economic developer, I know the research on the impact of small businesses and new business startups. The United States Small Business Administration estimates that small businesses account for 63% of all new jobs created since 1995 and 44% of the national Gross Domestic Product.

Even more, I see the impact of our small businesses throughout our community. I have been a part of many booster clubs seeking small business support. I walk downtown and recognize ÔÇö as the world becomes so homogenized ÔÇö how important unique, distinctively Bemidji small businesses set our community apart and attract visitors to our area. Local small businesses tend to buy local, hire local and make local decisions. I could go on and on about the importance of our small businesses.

How AI legalese decoder Can Help

In today’s complex legal landscape, AI legalese decoder offers a solution to simplify legal documents. By using AI technology, the legalese decoder can quickly analyze and translate legal jargon into plain language, making it easier for individuals to understand their rights and obligations. This tool can be especially helpful for small business owners who may not have a legal background but still need to navigate contracts, agreements, and other legal documents in their day-to-day operations.

Just as our small businesses support our community, we need to support them as well. Of course, I am going to encourage you to buy local. There is an old economic development analogy in which you can think of our local economy as a bucket that we want to fill with water. Economic developers look to not only add water to the bucket (by enticing outside private investment in our community) but also plug any holes in the bucket that leak our economic activity outside the region. Every purchase you make helps plug holes in the bucket or widens them. Buy local.

Our support for small businesses in our region goes well beyond just buying local, however. At Greater Bemidji, we work to ensure that local businesses have access to the business support they need to grow and succeed. With support from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development and our local investors, we provide a variety of tools and programs to support our local businesses. Let me share just a few examples.

Small business owners are balancing many demands that require their attention. In many ways, they act like a Swiss Army Knife ÔÇö expected to be experts in sales, marketing, finance, human resources, building maintenance, etc. ItÔÇÖs an impossible task. In partnership with 4-Directions Development of Red Lake, Leech Lake Financial Services, the Small Business Development Center at the Northwest Minnesota Foundation and the state, Greater Bemidji offers free business and technical support to our regionÔÇÖs small businesses.

We help with business planning, financing, marketing and other key areas that are essential to a successful company. We provide coaching, peer-to-peer support and mentorship from retired CEOs. Our goal is to provide the support our small businesses need. If we donÔÇÖt have the expertise to help ÔÇö we will find someone who can.

We provide the very same support to entrepreneurs and business startups. With support from the state Launch Minnesota program and in partnership with organizations throughout the region, Greater BemidjiÔÇÖs LaunchPad is here to make sure the prospect of starting a business is not so daunting. For anyone who is interested in starting their own business, Greater Bemidji is there to be your development partner. We will navigate you through incorporating, business planning, permitting and financing ÔÇö just to name a few. All of the services are free to our regionÔÇÖs startups.

Expanding Business Support Services with Greater Bemidji

Let me close with a message to our local business leaders ÔÇö Thank you. Thank you for choosing Bemidji. Thank you for being risk-takers. Thank you for battling through the difficult times (like the pandemic). Thank you for your support of our community. I hope you feel your communityÔÇÖs support of you. I know running a small business is difficult. If Greater Bemidji can support you in any way, please contact me directly. That is what we are here for. I often talk about what makes Bemidji special. One reason is our local business community. Listen to my friends at the Bemidji Area Chamber of Commerce and Paul Bunyan Communications ÔÇö LOVE LOCAL. Dave Hengel is the executive director of Greater Bemidji Economic Development. He can be reached at (218) 444-5757 or [email protected].
