****** just grabbed a
No. The military doesn’t have banks. Some of the banks, like usaa and navy fed, primarily serve service members, but they are not actually associated with the military. You can keep your old bank. When you get to basic, you’ll just provide your bank account info (whether that’s usaa, bofa, wells Fargo etc.) and they’ll deposit your pay there.
How old are you?ĖNo, you are not required to use those banks. You can keep your current account if you want to. The military doesn’t care.
I would recommend using USAA or NavyFed for a checking account, though. You can just do it sometime after you finish basic.
They’re both good, though I’ve heard some negative things about USAA’s customer service in recent years.
As part of the enlistment process your recruiter will have you fill out direct deposit forms which say where you want your paycheck to go. You already have a bank so can easily keep that bank and list your account and routing number for the direct deposit. USAA, Navy Federal, And others associated with the military are not owned or controlled by the military, they just cater towards service members. Many service members opt to get an account with them due to they waive ATM fees at other locations.
I would recommend looking into whether your current bank waived ATM fees and/or has nationwide locations to make accessibility to your money easy. Nothing worse than having local bank and then anytime you need to withdraw cash you’re paying $3-10 ATM fees.
No you got it all wrong. The military does not have bank accounts. These are their own companies not run by the military. Navy Federal is a credit union and like most credit unions they have stipulations on who can join. Navy Fed stipulation is you need to be military or DOD or have a family whoÔÇÖs in it. USAA is not a credit union but works the same way.
You can use whatever bank account your heart desires but navy fed is very popular because they are an awesome credit union
You can keep your current bank account. But you may want to consider applying to a bank that has more available branches where you are stationed should you need to see someone in person. Just my two cents.
Go sign up bro, get yourself a bonus if you can. Give 100% every day especially in training, get your injuries documented while you are in.
Go get some
Keep your current bank. If youÔÇÖre stationed overseas like in Germany and live off base you will have to open a bank account with a bank on base in order to pay rent and bills. Nothing wrong having more than one bank account.
You can have multiple active checking accounts with different banks. It won’t affect your credit either
As others have said, you can keep your current bank.
The only service that will make you open a new account when you start bootcamp is the Marines. If you join them, you will start a new account with either Navy Federal CU or Frontwave CU. You donÔÇÖt have to keep that account after bootcamp.
The DoD does own a bank called Community Bank. It only operates on US bases outside the US and provides services like converting money to the local currency and bill pay to local landlords.
USAA and Navy Fed are not military banks. They are banks set up primarily for service members. You do not HAVE to use those banks. Your pay can go anywhere.
I will say, it is wise to use one of those accounts for your direct deposit. Something that has repeatedly been “threatened” is no pay for the military in the event of a government shut down. Navy Fed and USAA will do 0% pay day advance loans for military members.
