## Applying for Social Security Benefits due to Agoraphobia and Mental Illnesses

I have recently applied for Social Security benefits after losing my job due to agoraphobia and multiple other mental illnesses that I have been diagnosed with. It has been a challenging time for me, trying to navigate the process while dealing with my conditions.

## Seeking Support and Guidance from Others

I am curious to hear about the experiences of others who have gone through a similar situation. How did you manage to attend the required doctor appointments when you are almost housebound? Currently, I am only able to see a psychologist once a month, thanks to my father accompanying me and providing support during the visit.

## Difficulty in Accessing Healthcare

The thought of traveling to a new doctor seems daunting given my limitations. If only Social Security could understand the challenges I am facing and the impact it has had on my ability to work. It feels like a frustrating situation, and I am desperately seeking ways to make the process easier for myself.

Very unlikely for a general psych diagnosis or multiple psych conditions to ever get Disability for.  Disability is only about a Diagnosis if it’s catastrophically disabling.

If it’s not catastrophically disabling, its  about proving your Functional Abilities are so whacked, you can’t possibly be expected to earn SGA – $1550 a month.

The SSA will evaluate you against the criteria on these two forms:

    1. **Residual Physical Functional Capacity** is evaluated by the SSA on this form: [https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms/images/SSA4/G-SSA-4734-BK.pdf](https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms/images/SSA4/G-SSA-4734-BK.pdf)
    2. **Residual Mental Health Function Capacity** is evaluated by the SSA on this form: [https://www.ssdfacts.com/forms/SSA-4734-F4-SUP.pdf](https://www.ssdfacts.com/forms/SSA-4734-F4-SUP.pdf)

Despite popular belief, Disability is not awarded for having a condition alone or even multiple conditions together. Instead, an applicant must medically prove that their **Functional Ability to Work** is nearly non-existent. It’s the underlying reason the Denial Rate is basically 70%. People mistakenly apply thinking having a condition will get them Disability. It won’t unless that condition is catastrophically debilitating, in essence, a medically provable, verifiable Blue Book Condition.

For most Disability cases, the SSA wants up to date medical records going back about two years. To get approved, in general, 4 things are typically needed: Work Credits, a Qualifying Condition, Supportive Evidence and **extremely limited Functional Work Abilities** that prevent you from doing SGA Level work (earning $1550 a month). Typically, from application submission to getting a decision is 10 to 12 months and barely 30% will be approved. If denied, Reconsideration takes another 6 months or longer and has an 88% likelihood of Denial. If that too is denied, a court hearing will likely be 12 to 15 months after that and essentially comes down to a coin toss.

I do therapy twice a week but only online. Literally one of my goals is to go in person once every like six months because the anxiety of leaving my apartment is so strong. I had a breakdown when I went to my last med management appointment and luckily I had asked my therapist for support when I went because that’s what ended up helping. It’s tough for sure.

  • Traditional_Crazy904

There are therapists that do virtual sessions. You may want to look into that especially considering the agoraphobia

  • That_Smoke8260

Well I was in a mental hospital for 8th time when I found out through a case worker I should sign up took about 6 months to be deemed disabled and ssdi I also had at least 7 doctors for both mental and physical conditions

  • PowerfulBowler8050

Hi. You have to have enough work credits (40 is the lucky number) to even apply. You also have to have a long history of going to a doctor and trying all different kinds of medications and proving that they didn’t work. Being in therapy also helps show that you are trying to get better. They don’t care about your diagnosis. They care only about how your symptoms prevent you from holding down a job.

So, a work from home job would not work ? Why?
