You should worry about passive income once you have an actual surplus to invest. You’re not gonna generate anything without capital first unless you borrow.

  • Dawnshot_

If you don’t have a lot of cash saved up, you won’t be able to create ‘passive income’, at least nothing that would be useful to you. At this stage if you want more money, you’ll need to work more hours

But think of it like this – you are probably at your lowest earning potential while studying. The investment you are making is in your own skills and will pay off once you get that first full time job for (hopefully) a whole lot more than what you get now

“Broaden your horizon” is a phrase oft used in reference to travelling

Travelling is the lest efficient way to broaden your horizons, travel is fun but not very educational.

If you actually want to “Broaden your horizons” then read a book from the library or watch a documentary on YouTube – here I will start you off – “What is solipsism and how do you know you are not a brain in a vat?” – off you go sister

I did an undergrad and post grad degree. Seven years of uni. Worked part time throughout both degrees. Was able to go out for food, pay my rent and a cheap south east asia holiday each year but i didnt live a luxury life (average acom, roommates, cheap drinks, cheap restaurants, shitbox car, cheap clothes etc). Unfortunately its a very difficult time to get ahead asset wise but you need to view it as ÔÇ£investing in yourselfÔÇØ time

ÔÇ£Struggling to make ends meetÔÇØ and ÔÇ£passive incomeÔÇØ do not go together

  • FitzelSpleen

You’ve got a few different concepts in the post.

“Broaden your horizon” not entirely sure what this means to you. Others have mentioned traveling and studying, or reading. Maybe you’re looking for a new skill to learn? I’d recommend learning how to program/code, if you haven’t already. It can give you a slightly different way to look at the world. Alternatively, learn a language.

“Making end meet” you’re looking at living more cheaply. What are your major costs, and how can you reduce them. I’d be thinking food, transport, and accomodation.

“Passive income” this makes me think of buying some ETFs for the sweet sweet dividends. Starting now is great, but don’t expect any real passive income for years to come.

I don’t know what you are studying, but if you can fit in a part time job it will broaden your horizons a lot, and give you things to talk about in job interviews. Even if its an unrelated field, just being able to talk about building relationships with coworkers, time management, generic things. The more random jobs I’ve had, the easier it becomes to find interesting stories to talk about in interviews for the next one.

On top of a job I do lots of one-off things to help my budget. The randomness of it also gives a lot of different experiences.

    – market research – about 1 session a month, pays about $100 – $150. sometimes by Zoom, sometimes in person – these often comes with food or drinks. I think about advertising differently after having taken part in enough of these. google market research Melbourne and sign up to all the agencies.

    – [I wrote up a long review on online / app surveys](https://old.reddit.com/r/beermoneyAus/comments/15v3kf9/pros_and_cons_review_referral_bonuses_for_survey/) Mostly do these when on the bus.

    – Signed up to a few temp / labour hire agencies for events work like handing out samples at train stations or shopping centres, working at the royal easter show, or office admin work over summer. Your uni careers centre likely also has a noticeboard that is good for casual work too.
