What kind of engineer? My partner wants to go to school for mechanical engineering and they are such a specialized field that pretty much every employer near us is fair chance and will essentially take everyone with some hvac experience and a degree with a pulse.

Systems engineer? That might be harder.

Would you be able to get a seal in your state? Or do you have one?

I’m an engineer. Since you are in Michigan and an Electrical engineer I would recommend manufacturing in the auto industry. I’m sure you can do well in robotics and all those plants are always searching for people who knows robots. Look for companies that are Fair Chance. Also if you’re willing to move to Ohio you can try [Crown](https://us-careers.crown.com/job/New-Bremen-Electrical-Engineer-OH-45869/1034092600/). I’ve interviewed with them before and asked them about hiring felons. They will do a BC which goes back 7 years and they really care about violent felonies.

If you need to be in Michigan then keep applying. When you get an interview always bring up the BC with HR. Tell them that you’ve had problems with the BC in the past because your records were mixed up with others. That can be a good lead into asking more important questions about the BC.

Sorry to bring this thread back after a few days…but something you might also look into is CAD positions. I provide housing for RSOs in my area and one of my tenants does CAD for an architectural firm and specifically electrical schematics. While this isn’t specifically EE work, it is relative. The important thing is to get that foot in the door, show your capabilities and move up to work commensurate to your education.
