Should I Choose AAA or State Farm for Life Insurance: Comparing the Two Options

I am considering switching my auto insurance to AAA, but I currently have a bundled policy of auto, renters, and life insurance with State Farm. My primary reason for switching is to save money, but I would like to keep the bundle intact.

Current Life Insurance Coverage and Costs

I presently pay $12 per month for a 20-year term life insurance policy with State Farm. However, if I decide to switch to a permanent policy, State Farm has informed me that the monthly premium would increase to $70. On the other hand, AAA has offered me a monthly premium of $38 for a permanent life insurance policy if I choose to switch to them.

Lack of Knowledge about Life Insurance

Confessing my ignorance on the subject matter, I must admit that I have very little understanding of life insurance. The reason behind obtaining this coverage was simply because I was told that it is not taxable.

Seeking Advice: AAA vs. State Farm for Life Insurance

Considering the decision at hand, I am left wondering which option would better suit my needs – AAA or State Farm for life insurance. Do you have any dependents that financially rely on you? If not, it is very likely that you don’t need life insurance. You are better off saving your money. Use it to try to max your tax free investment accounts like your 401(k) and IRA.

But if you do need life insurance, term is best in 99%+ of situations. State Farm and AAA are both good, but honestly the life insurance market is very regulated so any US company will pay your claim if need be.

Go to a local independent agent who can quote you options from 10+ companies to compare to your AAA & StateFarm rates. They are particularly useful for shopping around when you have a bundle of different policies since it is a pain to get a single combined quote on your own.

Amongst the big national carriers my pick would be Amica. They’ve given me the best rates and don’t seem to spend nearly as much of my premiums on advertising and marketing as most of the rest. The cheapest rates and best service tend to be with smaller state/regional insurers though; particularly any mutual societies that your occupation, club memberships, or other personal attributes might qualify you for but exclude the general public.

As others have noted unless you have people dependent on your income who will financially suffer if you die you don’t need life insurance beyond maybe a small burial policy.

Does your employer include basic life insurance as part of your benefits plan? My employer covers like 1x my salary for free to a named beneficiary, and I can purchase 2x or 3x for an additional deduction from paycheck

Please don’t get permanent aka whole life insurance. Resist whatever the sales person is telling you.

Since you said you have no dependents, there’s little reason to have life insurance.

If you do decide to continue to have some, seek out an insurance broker to find you the best bang for your buck. Do this for auto and homeowners insurance, too.
