It has been quite some time since I last traveled internationally due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, I am excited to be planning a trip to Hawaii later this year. In the past, when traveling abroad, I used to have a few options for spending money. My advice is to find a free bank account that has no international transaction fees or FX currency fees.
Banks like UP or Macquarie to name a few offer these accounts and I’d suggest opening one and putting in your AUD and then using it for your transactions. The good thing with this is that you don’t need to open a credit card as it’s your own money and you get a pretty good exchange rate that’s close to what you’d see on Google, as opposed to getting a crappy bank exchange rate (I believe the rate is set by Mastercard).
Additional positive is that you can withdraw cash with these cards as well, although you may have to pay an ATM operator fee depending on which machine you use.
I normally just use my debit card (Macquarie) and credit card (Bankwest). Both don’t charge international transaction fees and both use the Mastercard rate for the FX. Debit card doesn’t charge for ATM withdrawals either.
The difference between those options and exchanging AUD into whatever currency I want via Wise/Revolut isn’t enough to justify the hassle or the fees they charge.

whats your opinion of the wise travel card?
We recently travelled to Hawaii in January and cash is still available pretty much everywhere. I really cannot think of any places we went that did not accept cash.
Outside of this, I have the HSBC Global Everyday card which allows you to load up multiple currencies on the card (e.g., USD, GBP, etc) and when you pay at the register, the machine will give you the option to choose either USD or AUD as your preferred currency. This also avoids any international ATM fees which can be substantial depending on the percentage rate charged by your bank.
