## Deciding on Whether to Keep or Replace Your Car

Hey everyone, I am a 20-year-old university student who is looking to make a decision about my car. I currently have about $30,000 saved up and will be earning an additional 8-10k before the next school year. My annual income is around $20,000.

## Current Car Situation and Options

My car is a 2012 Nissan Versa with 200,000 km on it, and it’s starting to show signs of wear and tear. I am now faced with the dilemma of either keeping my car and paying for constant repairs, which makes me feel insecure every time I hit the road, or selling it for around $2,500 in my area and purchasing either a used car (given the current crazy market conditions) or a newer, more expensive one.

## Finding the Right Car for Your Needs

I need your advice on how much I should be looking to spend if I decide to buy a new car. I will primarily be using it for commuting and driving to and from university each week, which amounts to 100 km each way.

If you’re primarily driving 100k 2x a week (there and back) I would keep the car and pay for repairs. How much did you spend on repairs last year?

Between the higher insurance cost, more depreciation, other repairs you’re not going to be aware might be needed in the other car, etc. I don’t think it makes sense for you.

Unless your car is really in THAT bad of shape that you don’t think you can drive it for 60-90 minutes one way without breaking down

Start shopping for the used car now since you have the cash, then sell your Nissan. The used car market isn’t great, but it’s navicable if your aren’t needing to buy something ASAP.

I’d be looking for a slightly newer, slightly lower mileage Toyota/Honda/Mazda than what you have now.

    Make your starting point:

    -research make/model years to avoid
-single owner
-timing chain or belt. If the latter, has it been done?
-complete service history not from quick lube places (Carfax or paper receipts)
-no accidents
-definitely no total loss/salvage
-seller willing to let your mechanic inspect it before purchase

I’ll compromise on some of those if the price is right

I know middle class is hard to define. But I think most of us can agree this is decidedly not middle class right?
