Arkansas Tech University Student Research Symposium Winners Announced

The 2024 Arkansas Tech University Student Research Symposium showcased incredible talent, with judges selecting the best presentations. The ATU Office of Research and Sponsored Programs recently announced the winners.

The symposium featured a total of 126 presentations, including 85 in-person poster presentations, 30 in-person oral presentations, and 11 virtual poster presentations. Dr. Robert Charles Brown and Jill Lestage Brown Hall were the focal points of the event, which took place on Thursday, April 18.

With a high level of competition, the winning entries stood out among the rest:

Best Graduate Presentation

First Place: Andrew Rafferty and William Sappington delved into “Social Media Risk Messaging During the March 2023 Arkansas Tornadoes: A Qualitative Approach.”

Second Place: Musfikur Rahaman explored “League of Learning: Deep Learning for Soccer Action Video Classification.”

Third Place: Andrew Rafferty and William Sappington investigated “2024 Total Solar Eclipse: Examining the Preparedness and Risk Communication Strategies of Emergency Management Stakeholders.”

Best Undergraduate Presentation

First Place: Felicity West examined “The Relationship Between Algorithmic Social Media Use and Self-Diagnosis of Mental Disorders.”

Second Place: Rebecca Morse focused on “Alleviating Environmental Stresses in Native Arkansas Plants by Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Inoculation.”

Third Place: Caleb McClure, Corey Naegle, Holden O’Neal, and Chase Tallon presented “Spot On.”

Best Online/Virtual Presentation

Tanner Broyles, Dalton Greene, and Dillon Pearson discussed “Would It Be More Cost Effective for Arkansas Tech to Plant Winter Crop to Extend Grazing Periods Using No-Till Practices?”
