If you are able to work- you will be better off financially. Can you get employment assistance through your state rehabilitation department- They may have ideas of jobs you can do, know businesses needing help and may have paid training opportunities.👍
My friend got diagnosed with a fatal disease. End-of-life diseases are supposed to be automatic approval. He waited 3 years of denials and appeals. Then he got a lawyer and it took them another year. Now that he is approved, he probably has less than a year to live.
So I’m just saying don’t hold your breath. Oh, and get a lawyer.
Yes. I have. I was on disability and returned to work because I started to improve, and the payments were so low and I wanted to have more structure. I then got sicker, and it became a huge hassle to try to get it back.

and sales. I applied at Target, Meijer, and walmart. No response 😕.
The thing not mentioned is…SSI is rarely enough to cover housing by itself. Unless you room with someone, you will most likely still need low income housing of some sort.
You can work while not meeting SGA substantial gainful activity. You’d have to look up the maximum hours/income.
If you have little support system, would you be open to moving to an area that has shorter wait times for income based housing? Rural areas could have wait lists as little as 2 months. The towns that have barely anything, maybe a gas station or dollar general if they’re lucky. Our closest bigger town that has public transportation (only during certain hours) has shorter waiting times also like 2-6 months, varies a lot.
I get it. If income is not about 3 times higher than Rent / Mortgage, life will be harder than many can withstand and in turn, makes many go back to work.
I dont work cause i cant hold a job. Absolutely i would work if i could escape the system. I live on 950$ a month (cause i didnt pay in a ton as ive been on disability since i was 20). Its awful.
I would work if I was able to even if it was just for 2 more years it was also increas your retirement wages.
I don’t have advice. But if you work remote there’s alot of opportunities.

If you can do remote work, why would you need disability?
You need to apply for dire needs status. It won’t make your hearing immediate, but it will bring the wait time down from to 2 years to maybe a year. I would also suggest getting a lawyer. My opinion on your title question is that someone who can work full time has no reason to apply for disability. The whole point is to prove that you cannot sustain gainful employment due to disability.

I know people on SSI who work remotely a bit. I certainly cannot work full time. But I’m locked into bad situations either way. Pursuing SSI and having to work NO MATTER WHAT to pay my bills but no more than $1K month – as my lawyer told me – or NOT pursuing SSI and being able to work remote part time and make enough to at least rent a room so I’m not couch surfing and trying to fight off being unhoused
If you work, you can advance in skills and pay. On disability, you’ll be poor for life.
Go to your county social services office and see if they can help with housing.
If you have worked previously and you have enough work credits you should try for SSDI. I have been on SSI in the past but had to work because I was receiving the “maximum allowed” even with cost of living increases and I was receiving only $5500 a year. The federal poverty level is $11,000. I had help with housing so I contacted vocational rehab and they helped me. I also obtained 3 college degrees which helped too.
Am I understanding correctly? You’re hoping for safe, free, non-section 8 housing? You’re hoping a private property owner will let you live rent free?
I differentiate between poverty and destitution shelter less indigence
Death from indigence in a capitalist society is not uncommon.
Nobody dies from poverty. People die from lack of safety and shelter. Some of us wish we were in poverty because we would be better off than indigent.

if you can work and are able to get hired with all the barriers, you should be working for the simple fact that you will do way better financially than social security disability will ever be able to provide. you could have it approved and still be not be stably housed because ssi barely pays 900 monthly.

Wow, I’m so sorry you’re going through this struggle. This should not be happening to you in this country. Why our government doesn’t put its citizens first is beyond my understanding. I did force myself back to work. I was going to go on long-term disability, using the benefits from my current place of employment. But then I started to research the marketplace for private insurance, and the rates were crazy – almost the amount for a rental. How do they expect the disabled to pay such high premiums and then there’s the out-of-pocket expenses too?
I pray your situation changes soon. You’re a US citizen and you have rights and you should be able to get affordable housing.

I could not do the disability route. I was assaulted when I wax on the street. My health tanked. If I hax dine the disability route there were no guarantees

Yes. I forced myself back to work after getting my first denial for SSDI because the process took such a toll on my mental health.
Literally couldn’t if I wanted to. After getting SSDI benefits and Medicare I was well enough to work part time as long as I didn’t work more than like 15 hours a week and it had to be spread out just perfectly. I did find a perfect part-time job but I left in the summer of 2021 because my hours have been reduced because of Covid but there were no Covid protections anymore and I couldn’t see risking it for $80 a week or whatever I was taking home at that point
I went back on my own doing , been working for over 30 yrs after full disability. They used return to work program that kept me on disability for a yr just incase something happens, I also changed vocation I got help to get retraining for computer networking
While waiting on disability just get a part time job making like $1000 a month call in when you need to they just don’t allow people who are making over sga $1400 a month? Don’t give up. I had to apply when I was 25 no attorney would take my case I was diagnosed with severe ankylosing spondylitis and it took me almost 3 years. I had to go to my hearing with no attorney my doctor wrote a letter for the judge in my updated medical notes explaining my condition and how it affects my ability to work and the treatments i tried and if there’s anything else to try. He wrote there was a small chance that it could get better within 5 years. I also wrote a statement to tell the judge. Don’t over exaggerate your symptoms report your symptoms just as it states in your medical notes as that’s what you tell them as well. He thanked me and stated these things helped him a lot. I make $1600 from ssdi a month I was approved 2 weeks after the hearing. Good luck I got $17,000 back pay also make sure to apply for ssi and ssdi as ssdi don’t pay you for thr first 6 months and ssi will pay you for those months if you qualify for ssi ($2000) max savings and assets your 1 house and 1 car don’t count ssi will only pay you for the months ssdi don’t pay you as usually you will make too much asdi to qualify for ssi payments except for this situation but you can also qualify short term this way as ssi payments starts from application date and ssdi payments take 6 months if you have any questions just ask.

No way. I retired at 49 and I’m 56 now. I’m never going back. I still have enough savings to get me to 59.5 until I can use some of my 401k.
