## Seeking Assistance for a Loved One after a Stroke
Hi all!
My dad (62m) recently suffered a hemorrhagic stroke and spent about a month in the hospital recovering. He’s doing much better now but definitely can’t go back to his job as a line cook in a restaurant.
He recently qualified for Medicaid which is awesome but will need some sort of income to survive as I cannot fully support him. How do you apply for social security disability? Is there a manual I can read? Or should I just try calling the county?
I feel like whenever I call the county I just get bounced around from person to person. I wish there was just a social worker or other person to help me navigate this. Thanks in advance (sorry if this is a repeat question, I looked for pinned posts).

Contact your local SSA FO and request an appointment for retirement and disability or apply online. Since your father is 62 he can qualify for retirement benefits as long as he has 40 quarters of coverage. At the same time, he can apply for disability. SSA will be able to pay him his retirement benefits first while the Disability Determination Services office makes a decision for disability. If they find him disabled under their rules, then his retirement will switch to disability which would benefit him more because they pay disabled beneficiaries as if they have reached their full retirement age.
Go to SSA.gov. You can apply for benefits there and even find publications about disability, retirement, etc.

You can apply online or call. Make sure you give them your name and contact info too. https://www.ssa.gov/disability/disability.html.
But be aware that the program rules require 3 months to pass after the stroke before they can assess his functioning but apply now to get everything started.
If he gets denied for disability because SS gives everybody a hard time, he can apply for his regular SS since he is 62.

I just started getting SS at 62 I didn’t care that the amount was less then full retirement, I have some health issues and I am done with working.
Actually you need time and patience – u/seoyon121 gave good advice – apply for both SS Old Age Retirement (SSOA) and SS Disability (SSDI) He will get a higher benefit under SSDI but may get SSOA faster and then switched to SSDi after approved.
You can do both online but make sure that the SSDI application has ALL the medical info and the doc is onboard.
