University of St. Francis Receives $500,000 Grant to Support Small Businesses

The University of St. Francis in Joliet has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration to launch an accelerator program aimed at assisting underserved small businesses owned by minorities, women, and veterans. This funding will provide a much-needed capital boost to these businesses and help them thrive in the market.

The program, known as the USF Small Business Accelerator, is now accepting applications, according to Shannon Brown, the Dean of the USF College of Business and Health Administration. The university hopes to receive its first batch of applications within the next few weeks.

The goal of the accelerator program is to support existing viable businesses and provide them with the necessary resources to take their operations to the next level. Through mentorship and guidance from experienced senior executives, entrepreneurs can gain valuable insights and knowledge to help them succeed.

The Small Business Accelerator will primarily operate out of the university’s St. Bonaventure Campus in downtown Joliet. This strategic location allows for easy access and collaboration between participants and program organizers.

Additionally, the University of St. Francis has been running a successful business incubator program at its downtown campus for the past eight years. After the grant funds are depleted, the university plans to continue supporting businesses that have utilized the accelerator program through the incubator program.

The acquisition of this federal grant was made possible with the support of U.S. Representative Bill Foster, D-Naperville, whose district previously included Joliet. The funding received will also benefit startup businesses that may have otherwise sought capital outside of the university’s incubator program.
