i do it with excel, you get use to it, its less than 2 minutes a week, log in to bank account and visa, copy and paste, its usually 1-4 transactions a week at most. NZ lacks good bank integrations at the public end at the moment, so your kind of stuck.

We have a revolving account and a budget on spreadsheet, we have been using goodbudget (GB) for a few years it’s easy to use for both of us. We mainly use it to track our credit card. As we use this for all purchases we food, petrol and big purchases.

The thing I like about it it’s like having separate accounts, I’ve set them up the same as our budget so every fortnight they get credited, every time we use the visa we add that transaction in GB.

We also use GB for some bank transactions like Rock gas and rates etc as we budget fir this in GB.

What we don’t add in GB is the regular APs we make. Power, streaming services. We found it easier to leave in spreadsheet.

The wife travels for work a bit and will use our visa, we have a tab in GB to track her work expenses. This saved us a few $$.

We also have a tab called unallocated. For when we break and purchase something not budget for. That tab gave us a shock when we first introduced it lol.

There maybe better apps out there now but this has worked for us

This has become bit of an ongoing project for me. I tried a few apps, but none of them were satisfactory.

I started doing it myself in Excel, with no prior knowledge, but kept trying to improve and automate a system. Over time this lead me down a rabbit hole of learning Excel and VBA programming.

I’m still improving my tracking system, but I’ve learnt some valuable new skills along the way!

    Just pay yourself first.

Ie forced savings out if your pay

On the expense side, work on an assumed whole number and pay all expenses out that account.

Soon, you will be able to see your expense running costs. Then separate the fixed costs and your unfixed costs.
