    Visa and MasterCard (& some others) are a dual message system for payments. (I guess that) Because they dealt primarily with Credit cards originally, from a merchantÔÇÖs point of view swiping a card equates to confirming with the issuing bank that they will extend credit equal to the value of the purchase so that the cardholder can complete the transaction.

    The first message is an authorisation _request_ and the second message is a clearing _transaction_. There is a third step, which the banks involved (via the network e.g., Visa/MasterCard) participate in, which is settlement. During settlement the money actually changes hands. This last part helps simplify the exchange because if youÔÇÖre a bank who provides merchant facilities to your business customers and issues credit to cardholders, then your merchants will be asking for money and your cardholders will be spending it so the actual net amount you owe to Visa/MC at the end of each day is all you really need to send out of your accounts.

    The moral of the story is that your bank couldnÔÇÖt identify that the clearing message was for the existing authorisation so it just force-posted it to your account. This could be because some identifiers in the message didnÔÇÖt match with the original (e.g. authorisation code or local currency amount), or maybe the merchant actually sent a (partial) reversal of the authorisation and your bank mishandled it and now canÔÇÖt marry the auth to the final request.

    A pre-release form is a form from the merchant confirming that they wonÔÇÖt try to clear the original authorisation thatÔÇÖs still on the account. It should drop off in about a week regardless, though.

    I’ve had the same thing with online purchases, it’s infuriating and forced me to make sure there’s always some survival money on a different card.

    If it’s of any comfort the pending transaction always cancels and I’ve never been hit with an overdraft fee (even though the account was overdrawn for a couple of days)

    we had this before when we purchased flights that cost us $3k, the pending transaction did drop off automatically but it still took 7 days

    I am assuming the bank has checked the authorisation number and they are different.

    If they are the same, and same amounts in the transaction the credit card department of the bank can remove.

    I believe as they need the merchant release the second transaction, the one pending, is a different authorisation number and the airline has stuffed up.

    Their system has run a fresh charge authorisation thinking the original has not yet been paid.

    Check account and if the second comes through report it to the bank for a chargeback

    It’s a credit card thing, not an airline thing

    Authorisation and charging are separate. This dates back to when you had to call to authorise a credit card

    The authorisation happens straight away

    The charging occurs when the merchant seems the batch, usually at the end of the day

    Hotels sometimes do this too. The pre-auth is basically a security of payment. When the time comes to make actual payment, they are supposed to use the pre-auth to complete (authorise) the transaction. Otherwise it will be released automatically, but can take several businesses days.

    If they charge a seperate transaction, then you essentially have a temporary double payment.

    The same thing happened to me with Finnair last year. The money came back almost immediately after speaking to Finnair but my account was overdrawn in the meantime and I didn’t have any other money due to the timing of it. Was a stressful couple of days

    This happend to my parents, flew Sydney to perth with Qantas for 3500 return and the charged a second lot of 3500 a few hours later 7k taken out, im not to sure how long it took them to get it back but made the account overdrawn
