When my mother died she had a lot of debts and the companies just waived them. So I would speak to them first. I didnÔÇÖt take on any debts on her behalf. She also didnÔÇÖt have a will.
Stay away from the state trustees. They can be pretty brutal and charge stupid amounts of money.
Apply for the Letters of Administration. It’s not difficult (I just did it in Victoria) and doesn’t cost much. If her estate is as small as you say, you probably won’t need a solicitor. Any debts your mother in law incurred will be paid out of the estate. Did she ever work? Is there likely to be any super, even a small amount?
Even if the funds in her estate won’t cover the bills, they won’t be visited upon you or anyone else in the family. I’m pretty sure they’ll just be written off if there is no money to pay them.
Technically, the campervan should be sold to pay any debts, although I imagine you or your sister in law could buy it, and sell it after she no longer needs it.
