They absolutely can, they just donÔÇÖt want to. I have done it. I just let dealers know up front, and the one who would handle the Alaska tag and title is the one I went with. You can easily print all paperwork needed from the Alaska DMV online as well. You can email the AK DMV with questions. They were very helpful when we were stationed in VA and bought a car. The car dealerships just didnÔÇÖt want to work with me.┬á
That doesnÔÇÖt seem correct. Vehicle sales tax is based on where the vehicle will be registered, not where itÔÇÖs purchased. I bought 2 vehicles in VA and registered them in Florida where thereÔÇÖs a sales tax exemption for military. Never paid sales tax at the VA dealerships.
I see it’s a Tesla. They don’t have dealers so cars are direct purchases, meaning the people in the show rooms have no flexibility. Tesla policy is that they register cars delivered in Virginia, and they have to render taxes. Tesla is extremely inflexible on this and doesn’t care about military laws. They will only follow the normal laws, not military exemption/exceptions. I tried to do this (different states) and I elevated it up every chain of Tesla that I could possibly reach, in every forum I could find, left messages, got call backs, spoke to managers and their managers, and at the end of the day Tesla did not give two shits and would not budge. They were willing to lose the sale.
I ended up paying $7K in taxes and registering in the state I was stationed in. Love the car.
I just bought a vehicle in Virginia, but it was tagged in FL. I shouldÔÇÖve been exempt from FL sales tax, but the dealer couldnÔÇÖt figure out the paperwork. So I just paid the tax and called the FL DMV to have it refunded.
So in short, yes it is possible but dealers are lazy and youÔÇÖll probably have to do the leg work yourself.
I really appreciate everyone’s time in the matter. I plan to call Alaska directly tomorrow and ensure I have what I need. I will also be re-visiting the dealership since they have the car I want to talking to a person in finance.
When something can save you a couple grand, its well worth my time.
They just want to be a pain in the ass. Call around and see what dealerships will work with you on it.
