COVINGTON, Ga. – In an effort to promote community partnerships and uphold Rotary District’s initiative of Going Green, the Rotary Club of Covington embarked on a project that involved placing two beehives at the newly-constructed Emmons Water Treatment Plant in Stanton Springs in April 2022. Partnering with Dr. Marcus Pollard of the Newton County College and Career Academy and the Newton County Water and Sewerage Authority, the club also collaborated with the Eco Eagles, an environmental club at Eastside High School, to add an artistic touch to the hives through painting.

The first batch of honey, harvested by Pollard in June, was expertly bottled with the assistance of the Newton County College and Career Academy’s Agriculture Education Department. Now, this sweet reward from the club’s labor serves as a special treat for its guest speakers throughout the Rotary year.

President Lauren Poynter expressed her satisfaction with the project, stating, “When we began the project, it was a great opportunity to develop community partnerships and push forward our Rotary District’s initiative of Going Green. Now, to be able to taste the fruits of those labors and share it with those who come to our meetings every week is terrific.”

The Rotary Club of Covington has received positive feedback from guest speakers such as local football coaches and Newton County Manager Harold Cooper, who have enjoyed the delightful gift of local honey. Beyond its delectable taste, this honey has had a positive impact on the Stanton Springs area due to the crucial pollination provided by the local bees.

Dr. Marcus Pollard, head of the NCCA Agriculture Education Department, emphasizes the significance of bees in Covington’s ecosystem, stating, “The pollination provided by bees to Covington’s local flowers, trees, fruits, and vegetables is too often taken for granted. The impact is as close as our local farmers’ markets. That produce depends on bees for pollination, and the bees depend on all those nectar sources to produce the honey both they and we depend on and enjoy. It’s all part of a cycle we too often take for granted.”

To further support the cause, community-minded individuals, school programs, and members of the business community can sponsor a hive through their donations. Dr. Pollard assures that these sponsors will be involved in servicing the hives, receiving educational insights about bees if interested, and sharing the honey harvest.
