Thanks for feedback – IÔÇÖll contact Rakuten on Monday and post the outcome on here as a data point.

Edit: Update: money came back to Wise early on Monday morning. Resent with correct katakana name and arrived safely.

A bit surprised Wise doesnÔÇÖt check recipient names for domestic transfers like all the banks do, but they didnÔÇÖt charge me a fee for the failed transaction so overall no problems.

As u/Klajv suggests, there are a number of options as to what happens.

    a) The transfer is rejected and returned from Rakuten, minus fees (probably least likely)

    b) The transfer is never initiated by Wise due to the name mismatch (this would be the likely event in a normal bank transfer)

    c) The transfer is delayed on Rakuten’s end until a staff member confirms it (as the name in the transfer system is in katakana, and so the transfer won’t be automatically approved.)

If you don’t hear anything by Monday, probably easiest to phone Rakuten and/or Wise to check out the status of the transfer.

Besides the possibility of the transfer being rejected for mismatched information (in which case the money should be returned to your Wise account), it might simply be that it takes time to process the transfer.

Some banks wonÔÇÖt register or even process the transfer until the next business day or two. The processes are getting better, but I wouldnÔÇÖt trust R Bank to be up-to-date. Bank is not one of their focus offerings, hence the crappy UX compared to Card or Pay.

What does Wise say about the transfer’s status? They are pretty accurate in estimating ETA and also clearly indicate eg. when they send the money via SWIFT instead of direct (above 100õ©ç).
It’s also possible that Rakuten received the transfer but it’s on hold for review (due to internal anti money-laundering policies).

  • Klajv

Oh this is normal. When you do something like this, the money just ends up in the account of a random redditor, so it’s good that you asked here. Eventually the person should show up and you can settle the issue.

(I’ve seen cases where it seems like they hold it until you contact them, but also cases where they reject it or contact you about it. Talk to your bank)

IÔÇÖve transferred to my Rakuten account a few times. Sometimes it takes longer than others. If I recall correctly, one took a couple of days, I think it was due to a bank holiday I hadnÔÇÖt been aware of when I sent the transfer.
