I am currently embarking on a new academic journey at the age of 38, pursuing a double major in Radio/Television/Film and Substance Abuse Counseling. However, a cloud of uncertainty looms over my decision as I am concerned about the impact of my past legal issues on my career prospects in these fields. Hard to say for sure, but seems like there would be a chance especially if you are not a RSO.

However, maybe the bigger question is how do you intend to make a living with those majors and if applicable pay back any student loans? If that is your passion that is fine, but I just want to point out that there degrees/certificates that take less time/money and have a better ROI than those majors

I previously worked in radio for eight years prior to my arrest. While I am still on good terms with my former boss, he said he probably wouldn’t hire me back. The public perception was just too much for his company. I have also worked television and print media as well, but that was 15 years ago and thought about going back to one of them and they said the same as well.

As far as substance abuse counseling, it is a possibility, but I highly doubt you’ll be able to get certified or licensed in it. If you are willing to, there is a guy on Tik Tok named Jesse Crossen (or Crosson). He’s not an SO, but is really for giving everyone a second chance and he has a nonprofit he works with. He might be able to give you further insight into that field of study.

I got 4 chances to start over. Before I found d the right path. That was 31 years ago. I have a family, a nice house, 3 cars and 2 businesses. I even have an adopted child. Who was adopted at age 16.

I turned my life around and enjoying it. I try to help others as much as I can. Please ask anything we are all here to.help.

America has a strong cancel culture. Just something to consider.

To be honest, those arenÔÇÖt things IÔÇÖd recommend anyone get a college degree in to begin with. Radio/TV/Film is a difficult industry to break in to without having any obstacles to overcome and Substance Abuse Counselors are so overworked and underpaid itÔÇÖs not funny. While IÔÇÖd never want to discourage someone from doing it altogether, it is something you should consider. It have several friends in that field, one who is the head of nursing at a mental health facility and is directly in charge of hiring and managing the Substance Abuse Counselors – the burnout rate is super high and even when she hires them at the max pay sheÔÇÖs allowed to itÔÇÖs really not fair compensation. If your heart is in it, go for it, I just want to point that out because it is more difficult for a RSO to change careers.

Some jobs/professions to consider would be

    Professional job/certifications:
    Paralegal
    Graphic design
    Web design
    Video editing
    E-commerce
    Architecture/blueprint making
    Online marketing
    SEO
    Computer programming
    Accounting
    Billing
    Technical writing
    Underwriting
    Database Administrator
    App Developer
    Account Management
    UX/UI Design
    Wholesale Sales Representative
    Network Administrator
    Customer service
    Call center

You can be part of labor unions…. so unions most likely won’t be an issue. I personally think those with records like this will do best in fields where you can work independently. Background check positions will be trouble.

  • BeautifulAd8378

Student loans are not worth it nowadays. I will finish paying mine off this year 15 years after I graduated. Either try to start a business or get a commission only sales job where you can be 1099 and they might not dig into your history as much

  • iblbrt

Do you already have a degree? You say ‘going to school again’.

  • Striking_Sky_4016

With radio/film/television there’s a reasonable possibility you’ll be asked to work on a project involving minors so you might be required to get the American equivalent of a working with childrens check. Also as someone who used to work in that industry I’d recommend against university. The industry cares much more about your experience than your qualifications so if that’s something you still want to do I’d do whatever course you can find that’s affordable and fast to get your skills quick and spend money you save on equipment you might need.
