I think you can do it on your own. (Shout out to freetaxusa.com) You can always start early and if you run into issues contact someone.

If in USA, I’d use TurboTax or some similar product .Walks you through the scenarios listed. IMO, it does not warrant a tax professional. If you go through IRS website, it walks you through the free sites to file electronically. Good luck. You got this!💪

You should be fine doing it on your own.

I think tax professionals bring the biggest value if you run your own business and want to maximize write offs, if you own rental properties and are dealing with depreciation or if you have especially complicated stock trades.

Otherwise you’re basically just paying for the convenience of having someone else do your taxes. Some people prefer to pay for that service just like some people pay others to clean their homes. It’s a nice to have but they don’t have any kinda magic formula to reduce your tax bill that you couldn’t do yourself with the cheaper options available.

Accountant here. You don’t need a CPA for this. I use TurboTax for my own tax. You will be fine as long as you follow the software’s instructions. If you are still uncomfortable, TurboTax offers it’s own human advisors who are tax professionals.

Turbo tax will make sure you get your kid’s credits and all that. Unless you do massive charitable donations, or other similar write offs, then you’ll probably just get the standard deduction anyway, and there’s no sense in paying somebody to do something that can be done in less than an hour on turbo tax.

This is like home improvement things. What is the utility to you of paying a professional? I am an accountant (I don’t do tax!) and use H&R block software myself. I will tell you that most people who pay for taxes would have saved money easily doing it themselves.

You’re probably good on your own. But if tax stresses you out, feel free to outsource it like you do all other activities. I don’t change my oil or mow my lawn because my time and focus is always better deployed on income generating activities.

Here is a good directory of tax professionals

Do you usually do your taxes on your own? This can all be done on your own if you feel comfortable with it. Some people can do it just fine and some people have issues and then call me and have me do it. Nothing you mention is particularly note worthy so you can decide if you wanna do it or not.

Used turbotax for nearly twenty years now. Should be good to go. You don’t have to pay just in case you get stuck

Try TaxFreeUSA, I would never pay a CPA, you can even do it without software if you follow the 1040 instructions step by step. I do my boyfriend’s taxes, and he is self employed, sole proprietor, several pages and forms, but if you concentrate on it, it is easy.

  • Scthrowaway167

I pay like $200 every year and it’s well worth it. Between kids and the investments and house and stuff it makes a difference. When I had no kids, less income and assets then turbo tax was fine.

  • utvols22champs

You should always, always, always have an accountant and an attorney at your fingertips. I could’ve filed my own taxes but my accountant hasn’t always gotten me back a much larger refund. My daughter is 21 and she uses him too. Can you do it by yourself? Yes. Should you? No.

  • backupterryyy

I’ve used 2-3 of the main filing companies and they all do a great job. I work outside the US/kids/IRAs.. always been able to do what I need to do.

On top of that, because you *can* do it all without a professional, you *should* so you can learn more about it all works, in my opinion.

  • randomhero1980

Do it yourself. I’ve been using 1040.com for years, it isn’t totally free but cheap enough I haven’t jumped ship. They are all using a derivative of drake software anyways.
