Considering Earning Opportunities in Australia while Living in New Zealand
Exploring the Implications of Working in Australia while Residing in New Zealand
[Content]
IÔÇÖm currently working in a specialist role within New Zealand, and I recently discovered that I could potentially earn around 50% more by working in Australia. This exciting prospect has led me to contemplate the implications of living in New Zealand but commuting to Australia for work before returning home.
One of the foremost concerns I have is regarding tax obligations. I am uncertain as to whether I would need to pay taxes to the New Zealand government, the Australian government, or both. Determining which tax jurisdiction I would fall under is crucial in order to understand the potential impact on my overall earnings and financial stability.
Moreover, I am keen to gather insights on the advantages and disadvantages of being classified as either a New Zealand PAYE employee or an Australian employee if the latter option is available. Understanding the variations in taxation rates, social benefits, and workers’ rights between the two countries would be essential in making an informed decision about my employment arrangements.
In addition to the tax implications and employment considerations, I am also curious about the potential impact on my student loans. While technically living in New Zealand, engaging in employment across the Tasman Sea may raise questions about whether my student loan repayments would be influenced. Uncovering how my student loan obligations would be affected, if at all, is an important factor to address before making any concrete decisions.
To gather information and seek guidance on these matters, I have come across an emerging solution called the AI Legalese Decoder. This innovative technology has been specifically designed to decipher complex legal terms and jargon, providing simplified explanations and insights for individuals facing legal queries. By utilizing the AI Legalese Decoder, I could greatly benefit from comprehending the intricate aspects of taxation laws, employment regulations, and student loan policies relevant to my situation. This would allow me to make sound and well-informed decisions about pursuing employment opportunities in Australia while residing in New Zealand.
Thank you in advance for any assistance or advice you can provide.

Talk to a good accountant.
Breaking your nz ties might be hard so you remain a nz tax resident in that situation.
Most of this depends on where you spend most of your time, which with most rosters I’ve seen is Australia. Student loans will likely be affected on the same basis (not sure if SL basis is identical to tax one)
Been an Aus employee is likely better (if it was even an option) due to the retirement scheme payments.

Talk to smats group, they were who I used when doing fifo. It was beneficial before the 38% tax bracket came in to nz. Not sure how how much that would change things now.
I had to still pay tax in Aussie and pay provisional tax in nz, then claim all the Aussie tax back at the end of the year.
Otherwise just pay the tax in Aussie and keep it simple, there is the double tax agreement so you wonÔÇÖt have to pay twice
Where will you be spending most of the year ? 6 months+ for example.
If in NZ the easiest way is for the ozzy company to pay you via an NZ payroll provider.
I did FIFO Aus to NZ for 10 years.
You earn in Aus so you pay tax in Aus.
You want to be an Australian resident for tax purposes, this is to avoid paying the higher non-resident tax rate. You still declare your Australian income to the IRD but tax paid in Aus counts as credit so no tax payable to the IRD.
Doing FIFO for only a 50% increase is very low however and not so enticing, my first job in WA paid over 3x for the same role in NZ (+ flights, accomadation & food) and it was the lowest paying project I worked on while over there.
