Heading: Need advice on changing cash at Auckland Airport upon arrival

Hello,

I hope this message finds you well. I am reaching out as I will be visiting New Zealand in the near future and I wanted to inquire about changing my cash at Auckland Airport upon my arrival. My bank in Austria charges a hefty 5 percent fee for currency exchange, which I find quite inconvenient. Hence, I am searching for alternative options to avoid these additional expenses.

I would greatly appreciate if anyone with experience in this matter could provide some insights on how currency exchange works at Auckland Airport. Specifically, I am curious to know if there is a maximum amount that can be exchanged and any potential limitations or restrictions that might apply in this process.

Thank you kindly in advance for your assistance and guidance. I look forward to hearing from someone with firsthand experience or knowledge on this matter.

Best regards,

[Your Name]

Check out Wise. Lots of travelers are using such accounts for lower cost.

Please don’t bring EUR cash. You’ll lose a significant % on the rates and Auckland Airport kiosks are a classic of example of a seller’s market (e.g. the FX seller). As others have said, Wise is something to consider first. Few banks will change EUR or any FX notes within NZ too. Please be cautious as NZ is expensive without losing 3-10% of your EUR in fees and bad rates.

It’s 2023. Who travels with piles of cash to exchange? Just use an ATM to withdraw some cash. If you want a slightly better deal look for a card in your country that gives you lower fees or get a Wise or Revolut card.
I’ve carried the same emergency $50 bill on me for years without having to use it. Electronic payments are the norm here. Just use your cards. New Zealand isn’t like Austria or Germany where you get attitude when you are trying to pay with cards. Here you get side eye when you are pulling out cash.

Depending on how long you will be in New Zealand, I would still look into opening an account in New Zealand, and not waiting until youÔÇÖre there to do it. New Zealand looks hard at international fund transfers now, both for anti money laundering and for tax avoidance. As such a lot of payment services donÔÇÖt work here. Even paypal doesnÔÇÖt work the same here as everywhere else. I havenÔÇÖt used Wise as people are suggesting so maybe thatÔÇÖs enough, but if youÔÇÖre going to be here for months, IÔÇÖd seriously look into it

Pretty much everywhere in NZ accepts bank cards, itÔÇÖs quite different to Europe.

See if you can get a Revolut / wise / some sort of travel card instead of a pile of cash
