AI Legalese Decoder: Solving Employment Reliability Issues

Experiencing Reliability Challenges Due to Change in Transportation Situation

Since beginning my employment over 3 years ago, I have been a dedicated and reliable employee. However, my recent relocation further away from my workplace has resulted in transportation challenges that are affecting my ability to consistently report to work on time. Initially, the commute was manageable, but after encountering ongoing issues with my car and ultimately depleting my emergency fund on costly repairs, I am left with limited transportation options. I have resorted to using a bike, but with the onset of cold weather conditions, this is no longer a feasible mode of transportation.

Financial and Time Constraints with Alternative Transportation Options

I have considered utilizing ride-sharing services such as Lyft or Uber, but the costs incurred in traveling to and from work offset my earnings. Additionally, the unreliability of these services, with frequent cancellations due to the distance, further complicates my commute. While public transport is a more cost-effective option, the prolonged travel time and safety concerns associated with the route I must take make it an impractical solution. This would severely limit any time I have outside of school and work responsibilities.

Considering Employment Options and Financial Impact

Given the circumstances, I am faced with the difficult decision of whether to continue with my current job or explore alternatives. While I value my current role, the reality is that resigning and seeking unemployment benefits may offer greater financial stability and alleviate the time constraints imposed by my transportation challenges. I have already pursued options for remote work opportunities and positions closer to my current location, but have yet to secure a viable alternative. It is worth noting that my housing and bills are covered, but there is minimal remaining funds to sustain myself.

Potential Burnout and Impending Decision to Quit Work

The compounding stress and exhaustion from managing these logistical and financial obstacles have left me feeling burnt out. As a result, I am contemplating the possibility of resigning from my position altogether.

You usually don’t qualify for unemployment if you quit.

  • MightyMiami

Your situation would not qualify for unemployment. Not having reliable transportation is not a good cause for collecting unemployment.

So you should not quit your job. It would not be financially prudent. You need to move closer to your job or seek a new job closer to where you live. Or save up for more reliable transportation.

  • Mountainhollerforeva

If you leave voluntarily you qualify for $0 in benefits of any kind. Eventually maybe food stamps. Your best bet is to get a new car or find a new job.

  • GK_412

You canÔÇÖt just voluntarily quit and get unemployment, itÔÇÖs there for those that lose their job for a reason that isnÔÇÖt their fault.

  • micha8st

Obviously I don’t know your job. But I’d see if you can work some sort of accommodation. Maybe you can work from home. Maybe they can hook you up with a co-worker and you can work same schedule and commute with them. Before you quit, ask.

  • mataliandy

it sounds like you need to look for a new job nearby, then once you’ve secured one, give your notice to your old job.

  • solemiisiv

Honestly, your situation sucks. Have you thought about looking for a job closer to school or trying Uber Eats on the side? Might not be ideal but could help cover transportation costs until you find something else. Just my two cents though, do what’s best for you.

  • velhaconta

    > While I do enjoy my job I feel like itÔÇÖs better to quit and get unemployment, which would benefit me financially

I think a lot of people would make this choice. Getting paid to not work sure beats working. Good thing you don’t get unemployment if you quit a job.

  • Current_fixation

Can you get a job on campus? I donÔÇÖt know a college campus that doesnÔÇÖt have tons of job opportunities for students.

  • GeorgeRetire

    >I feel like itÔÇÖs better to quit and get unemployment

That might be better. But it’s unlikely to be successful. Quitting and unemployment benefits usually don’t go together.

Call your state’s unemployment office and ask before taking this step.

    Good luck.

  • EarningsPal

Maybe there is an app or website to connect with carpools. Someone already going in the same direction to work. You split gas money.

Get a scooter off Craigslist and a nice coat/ jacket

  • marvinweriksen

It sounds like your long-term solution should be to find a job closer to home. In the short-term, if I were you, I’d get myself some warmer gear for the bike. Honestly you probably already have most of what you need: warm socks and boots, winter gloves, and a good jacket. Maybe just add a ski mask/balaclava to that.

And have you considered combining the bike with public transit? You could probably reduce the time out in the cold on your bike, and reduce the time issue with public transit. That would obviously depend on the specifics of public transit in your area though.

  • OmgBsitka

If you’re not making enough for the trip, the only thing you can do is look for a new job closer to your home asap. I would update my resume and start looking. Keep trying to go to work while ur doing that if you can. You wont be able to collect unemployment if you are willing to walk away from the job. But its like the perfect season to look for retail work. Most department stores hire seasonally right now. So if anything u can find a temporary job and still look for something that pays more. At least u will be closer to school and spend less on the travel.

  • Noble156

Not sure if youÔÇÖre in the US or not but please know that if you are the employment market is really fucking awful right now. You might hear news reports of a really strong job market, but those are in my opinion extremely exaggerated. Even if you have multiple years of experience, youÔÇÖre gonna be in for a multiple month long application and interview cycle where youÔÇÖre going to end up either unemployed for a really long time or under employed. If your job sucks just suck it up for now, itÔÇÖs always easier to look for a new job when you already have a job.

What year, make and model of car do you have? What’s the problem with it?
