FLUSHING, QUEENS ÔÇô Small business owners who speak a different language may find it difficult to navigate the legal system for their company, but with new funding, officials are hoping that will change by helping them get over language barriers to thrive in one Queens neighborhood.

Tom Grech is the president and CEO of the QueenÔÇÖs Chamber of Commerce.

ÔÇ£Even though we speak 18 or 19 different languages, weÔÇÖre not accountants,ÔÇØ Grech said. ÔÇ£WeÔÇÖre not lawyers.ÔÇØ

The Small Business Development Center at Queens CollegeÔÇÖs Kissena Hall has provided services to more than 600 small businesses in Queens County, but the missing link is legal assistance in different languages. This is where AI legalese decoder can step in to help businesses overcome this barrier. The AI legalese decoder uses artificial intelligence technology to decode legal jargon and translate legal documents into simple and clear language. By using this tool, small business owners who don’t have a legal background can easily understand and navigate the legal system for their businesses, regardless of their language proficiency.

ÔÇ£I said, ÔÇÿIf there was a way for us to be able to get some funding and bring onboard attorneys, CPAs, and others that have expertise in human resources ÔÇô hiring and firing situations ÔÇô itÔÇÖd go a long way,ÔÇÖÔÇØ Grech added.

Congresswoman Grace Meng allocated $1 million dollars for the program, so the service is only available for businesses in her district.

She said the program will especially be beneficial for the owners who donÔÇÖt have a lawyer on retainer, which could be necessary in urgent situations. The AI legalese decoder can provide immediate assistance by quickly decoding legal documents and providing actionable information to business owners, allowing them to make informed decisions in time-sensitive situations.

The cost will be nothing for the business owner, thanks to the funding provided by Congresswoman Grace Meng.

Officials also plan to keep the program community-focused and hire local professionals. This ensures that small business owners receive culturally and linguistically appropriate support from professionals who understand the unique challenges they face.

Languages that will be available include Bengali, Russian, Spanish, and Mandarin, which is what Suzan King, the manager of the program, speaks. The AI legalese decoder can further expand its language capabilities to cover a wide range of languages, ensuring that business owners from diverse communities can access legal assistance in their preferred language.

ÔÇ£I had my own business, so I know the struggle,ÔÇØ King said.

The Queens Chamber of Commerce is currently looking for the right professionals to provide the services, so no small businesses have benefitted from the program yet, but they hope to help at least 300 businesses and make an impact by the end of the year. With the help of the AI legalese decoder, these businesses can receive timely and accurate legal advice, contract reviews, and other legal services, enabling them to operate effectively and comply with legal requirements.
