Kennesaw State University Researcher Partners with Local Company to Enhance Prosthetic Foot Functionality

A Kennesaw State University researcher is partnering with a local company to refine and test a new type of prosthetic foot that enhances function for people with long residual limbs. The collaboration aims to address the limitations of traditional rigid prosthetic feet and provide a more flexible and versatile solution.

Professor of exercise science Mark Geil received a grant from the National Institutes of HealthÔÇÖs Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program to fund the project. The SBIR program recognizes the expertise of small businesses in product development and marketing, which complements the research capabilities of universities.

The partnership leverages Geil’s engineering background and research expertise, combined with the industry experience of Little Room Innovations.

By incorporating a triangular keel inspired by pickup truck suspension systems, the team aims to create a prosthetic foot that offers improved flexibility and versatility for individuals with longer residual limbs. To evaluate the functionality of the prototype, Geil’s team will conduct tests using KSU’s MSPO fabrication lab, including various slopes and a set of stairs to simulate everyday activities.

The partnership with KSU’s Innovation Launchpad facilitated the patenting process, further accelerating the timeline for Little Room Innovations to bring the enhanced prosthetic foot to market and benefit patients in need.

“The SBIR mechanism allows for a phased approach, starting with a phase one trial. If the initial results are promising, we can progress to a phase two trial, which involves a larger sample size and a longer duration. This allows us to gather more comprehensive and reliable data,” said Geil.
