DANA Launches Three-Year Nonprofit Accelerator Program

The Delaware Alliance for Nonprofit Advancement (DANA) is introducing a three-year accelerator program for eight smaller nonprofits to support their growth and development. The program aims to provide technical assistance, coaching, consulting, and networking opportunities to participating organizations. Upon entry, each cohort member will undergo a comprehensive assessment of their organization, which will serve as a roadmap for their development. The Nonprofit Accelerator Program will also facilitate workshops, peer-to-peer mentoring, and other structured events to uplift these nonprofit leaders.

This program is designed as a combination of structured and unstructured elements to cater to the unique needs of each organization. DANA President & CEO Shelia Bravo emphasizes that customization is key to ensure that participating nonprofits receive the support and resources they require on their individual journey. Ideal candidates for this cohort should be organizations that have been operating for at least three years, have an executive director, and serve communities. Nonprofits with an operating budget of less than $3 million will receive priority consideration.

The inspiration for this accelerator program came from DANA’s observation of the challenges faced by smaller nonprofits in terms of internal capacity and growth processes. These difficulties became more apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic, when nonprofits were overwhelmed with increased demands from marginalized communities and lacked the resources to handle such situations. Many of these organizations were unable to apply for grants and struggled to manage tasks outside of their program-related focus.

In response to these challenges, DANA’s staff collaborated on the concept of an accelerator program that would provide direct support to smaller agencies. With the help of an $810,000 grant obtained from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) through Delaware’s federal delegation, DANA is now able to launch this program. Over the three-year duration, DANA will assist participating nonprofits with leadership development, board support, governance practices, operational strategies, financial management, and human resources, among other areas of focus.

The program offers two paths for organizations within the cohort, each catering to different needs: one path focuses on leadership strength, while the other focuses on operational support. In the first year, participants can expect to attend three workshops and have access to a bank of support hours that can be used as needed. As the program progresses, the availability of these support hours will gradually decrease. For instance, in the first year, DANA may connect a nonprofit with an accountant through these office hours to provide additional guidance on financial reporting. In the third year, the aim is to train a staff member within the organization to handle financial matters independently.

Participating in the accelerator program incurs costs ranging from $13,000 to $22,000 over the three-year period. However, thanks to the U.S. SBA grant, which covers 90% of the program’s expenses, nonprofits receive services valued between $130,000 and $220,000, as estimated by DANA. Interested organizations can submit their applications until October 1.
