It’s about improving the quality of life of those living throughout rural Indiana. That’s why the Vice President of Indiana Farm Bureau, Kendell Culp, recently testified before members of Congress about the help lawmakers can provide by supporting small businesses in rural communities.

Culp highlighted the importance of collaboration and pooling resources within the community to find solutions to the challenges facing rural areas. He emphasized that 53% of counties in the 2020 census experienced a decline in population, indicating the urgent need to sustain these communities. With decreasing population and workforce, small rural communities are facing a lack of financial support and essential services such as licensed daycare centers.

To address this issue, Culp shared an inspiring example of how Rensselaer united to establish the Appleseed Childhood Education and Franciscan Health Rensselaer. This partnership brought together a non-profit organization, Franciscan Health, and federal assistance through Child Care and Development Fund vouchers to provide accessible childcare services.

Culp stressed the positive impact of this initiative on the local community and businesses, emphasizing that providing essential services within rural areas is vital for maintaining a productive workforce. He urged lawmakers to continue incentivizing small businesses in rural areas and pass a Farm Bill with funding for rural development. Culp emphasized that the rural development programs within the Farm Bill can support communities in addressing quality-of-life issues. Additionally, he mentioned the availability of grant programs to assist with these initiatives, provided there is community commitment and involvement.

Furthermore, Culp highlighted the need to expand broadband access and address workforce concerns in rural communities. These factors play a significant role in supporting rural businesses and ensuring their sustainability.
