Introduction:
Greetings, members of PFNZ! If you have prior experience in purchasing a house, I’d like to tap into your knowledge. I am currently in the process of budgeting for furniture and appliances for my newly acquired home. I initially allocated $20,000, but it seems that amount won’t suffice. The cost of everything involved in furnishing a house has taken me by surprise. The purpose of this discussion is to explore potential solutions, and one tool that may prove beneficial is the AI Legalese Decoder.

When it comes to outfitting a new home, the expenses can quickly accumulate. Furniture items, such as sofas, dining tables, and beds, come with substantial price tags. 20k??

    I was half that.

  • katiekat2022

I had about 5k left when I moved in. None of it went on furnishings as the vendors took the curtain rails, curtains, dishwasher and left a non-working bathroom with no hot water and a faulty cylinder. The electrician had to put in a new board in the first month. Keep some money for emergencies out of your house purchase, but youÔÇÖll probably have to wait for new furniture. Ex rental.

It cost 12k just to get in the house with working electrics and a hot shower. I have been here 11 years and am still waiting on a new couch.

A friend re-did their kitchen and got a really decent discount at Harvey Norman if he got it all there.
I suspect the same at other major outlets as well

  • x_Twist_x

I spent about $45k. The previous place that I rented was fully furnished – so all we had moving in was one mattress and one desk. So we needed to buy everything for a 4 bedroom house.

Fridge, beds, couch’s, plates, glasses, pots, table, tv, sound system, sheets, duvets, towels – absolutely everything.

  • Ok_Comfortable_5741

I spent $3150. I probably will need to spend another 3-5k soon so 6-8k total. I buy almost nothing new tbh.

  • aussb2020

Trade depot is good for appliances – will get the prices down a bit

  • SpyCake1

Currently doing a similar calculations to OP and was also thinking around $20k should do it. Ask me again in a few months (hopefully).

  • kadiepuff

We were about 10k for oven, stove, range hood and dishwasher, dryer and washing machine. We waited for sales while our build was happening tho and did get a few good discounts. If you need a fridge and microwave ad 1500 on minimum and then couches can be anything from 1k to 10k so hard to say. Just make a list of what you need then go on a few retailers sites and u can pretty quickly figure out a rough estimate of what your going to need doe ur exact needs. Curtains it just depends on how many windows you have and their size are they custom or premade.

  • giftfromthegods

Our fridge and washing machine came in a deal with some other furniture when we brought the house off the owner for… deal was for $300.
We got a near new dishwasher for $350
Scored a new oven and hob for $150
Range hood I got from a garage sale.
    So $800 here.
    20k is laughable to me.

  • Budget_Panda8019

My budget was $5k, admittedly that was 10 years ago.

Everything was 2nd or 3rd hand.
Charity /opportunity shops or Trade Me.

Curtains were all from charity shops and maybe cost $800 for the whole house. Beds were secondhand, couch was $70 secondhand. No dishwasher as its not needed, I have hands. Pretty rubbish heatpump too, now I think of it!

It does feel nice with stuff being all new, but it feels REALLY nice being mortgage free 10 years later, saving up and upgrading things.
