    They will use an ‘expert witness’ to calculate your speed based on the frame rate vs. distance travelled. It’s basic maths.

    Although any decent lawyer would question the reliability of the camera and ask the expert witness to prove outside of manufacturers alleged specifications that the camera is recording in that frame rate. Which is something I can almost guarantee they wouldn’t have done.

    It’s going to cost you considerably and you could quite easily lose.

    Plenty they can do to ensure itÔÇÖs reliable as others have mentioned. Simplest way is to drive past the camera at the speed theyÔÇÖre alleging, and compare and contrast the footage of them and the footage of you.

    Picking two clear points on the footage and measuring the distance, and time taken. Time over distance = speed.

    ThereÔÇÖs precedent for using this type of evidence.

    They need to prove beyond a reasonable doubt you were speeding at the speed theyÔÇÖre alleging, or risk costs being awarded again them.

    TheyÔÇÖre not likely to have had the charges authorised if it was a bit iffy, nor would they waste their time prosecuting you for a simple speeding offence if there wasnÔÇÖt way more to this story.

    If they can determine the FPS of the recording and the distance of the camera to the road, then it’s fairly simple maths to work out a very accurate speed using it.

    Technically is someone does that math its super accurate. Speed is just distance over time. So if they can measure the space between two locations then track how long it takes for you to go from one to the other then it’s easy to extrapolate speed.

    Most don’t because it is a lot of resources but it’s possible. I’m curious what you did to get this attention.

    Camera frame-rates are typically very constant, you genuinely were likely doing 100 kmph. Your car does not warp the laws of physics of CCTV cameras, I’d cop the charge.

    If you have dashcam footage with GPS speed reading to support your claims then you might have a chance to dispute it. Otherwise, I expect it will be very difficult.

    It’s pretty easy to calculate:
    You car will have travelled from Point A to Point B over a given time in sec, which is your actual speed. The reference points (trees, poles etc) can be easily corrected to your car with basic geometry. This information will satisfy the Judge that you were doing a particular speed as you traversed the cameras field of view.

    Its a lot more accurate than “I believe I was travelling at less than 80kms.” If you had a drive recorder in your car, or could present GPS information to support your claim, then that may help you case.

    If the POPO are charging you, they have good reason to do so and rather than try to wriggle out of if, you ought to face up that you might actually need to make some corrections to your narcissistic ways.

    The only way I can see them being wrong is if the distance between the two points they used to calculate your speed was not measure accurately. If you can get the video you can work it out yourself if you go and measure a start and end point. But I’d expect they know what they’re doing since they are professionals in this area.

    I think it’s worth a lawyer. With some skill – this would probably be a beatable charge given that the ‘evidence’ is an uncalibrated device without certification for such an application. Make them pay your legal fees.

    Unless the footage had your license plate (i.e., side-on view only) then it could be any car.

    I’m assuming the date and time on the recording devices are accurate. The only correlation left is you admitting to being in that area at around that time in a vehicle mostly matching the description.

    More facts needed. How long was the distance used to measure your speed over? The error decreases with increased distance. How many FPS was the camera shooting at? More FPS equals more accuracy. What was the shutter speed of the camera? Longer shutter speed equals more inaccuracy.
