Title: Seeking Advice on Replacing Damaged iPad and Making a Claim

Introduction:
Hey team! Currently overseas, my daughter accidentally dropped my iPad on the concrete floor of a knife shop in Tokyo. Unfortunately, the device suffered significant damage, with the cracked glass extending from edge to edge, the glass slightly offset (sharp to touch), the LCD exhibiting signs of bleeding under the membrane, and a dent in the chassis. As a result, I’m seeking guidance on the best course of action to replace my iPad and make a successful insurance claim. Additionally, I would like to explore how the AI Legalese Decoder can assist in navigating the claim process efficiently.

    Do you have an excess?

Is that a 5th or 6th gen iPad? You can get them for a couple of hundred dollars used. Even used 9th gens you can pick up for $400.

What does your policy wording state? IÔÇÖve had a look at SCTI and it states depreciation applies but you should double check. I had a similar claim through my credit card travel insurance (ASB), ipad wasnÔÇÖt even a year old/current model and they said it was already worth quite a bit less than retail. Was barely worth claiming after the excess.

Dependent on wether your policy is for replace with new, or replace at market value. Because market value for an iPad of that age WILL be below your excess, in which case you just buy a new one and move along.

If itÔÇÖs replace with new, it would be worth calling them to confirm they can process the claim with images only and whether they would consider reimbursing you because they wonÔÇÖt have suppliers outside NZ for you to collect replacement goods from.

    1. You can try phone them and ask, but only during their strict office hours
    2. In my experience with SCTI it is a “do what you need to do to get home/safe and then claim the expenses (rental car, hotel) later”. Not for claiming for iPads and such, which would presumably be a claim under your contents insurance rather than your travel insurance.
    3. Read your policy documents.

Travel insurance generally doesn’t have very good cover for items like phones, ipads, laptops etc.

Travel insurance is mostly for if you get sick, flight delays/cancellations that involve extra accommodation costs or lost suitcases. The major things. Otherwise everyone would go on holiday, pay $200 for travel insurance and “lose” their $2000 laptop every couple of years.

Best thing to do is try to claim on your home insurance contents cover when you get back.

Looks like a pretty ancient ipad.

I don’t see a world where you’ll get any money for cracking a iPad that was purchased when John Key was still Prime Minister.

Don’t cry because it’s cracked, smile for the half decade of use you got from it.
