Italian Authorities: 41 Migrants Presumed Dead in Recent Shipwreck

On August 9, Italian authorities announced that a shipwreck in the central Mediterranean last week is believed to have claimed the lives of forty-one migrants, based on survivor accounts. The survivors, who have been taken to the island of Lampedusa, revealed that they were on a boat carrying a total of 45 people, including three children. Local public prosecutor Salvatore Vella has confirmed these reports and has initiated an investigation into the incident.

The ill-fated boat, which measured approximately 7 meters in length, departed from Sfax in Tunisia, a hotspot in the migration crisis. According to Italian news agency Ansa, the survivors stated that the boat capsized and sank after a few hours due to a large wave. Luckily, one of the surveillance planes operated by the Sea-Watch charity rescue group spotted the distressed migrants being rescued by a cargo ship. They were then transferred to an Italian coast guard vessel before disembarking in Lampedusa, where they recounted their harrowing experience.

Providing further details, Sea-Watch stated that the survivors were among the few individuals who managed to locate life jackets on the sunken boat. After the shipwreck, they remained in the water until finding an empty boat. The migrants arrived in Lampedusa exhausted and in a state of shock, having spent several days adrift at sea without access to food or drinking water. Prosecutor Vella has stated that the survivors will be questioned by the police.

The Italian coast guard, however, has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding the shipwreck. It has been suggested that the incident experienced by the survivors may not be related to the two shipwrecks reported by the coast guard on Sunday. These reports mentioned the rescue of 57 individuals and the recovery of two bodies, with indications that at least one of the sunken boats had also departed from Sfax on Thursday.

In a separate incident near Sfax, Tunisian authorities announced on Monday that they had recovered 11 bodies from another shipwreck, with 44 migrants still missing. Italy has served as a major route into Europe for hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers and migrants. This year, the country has already witnessed an increase in the number of migrant boats, with approximately 93,750 sea arrivals according to interior ministry data. In comparison, there were around 44,950 arrivals during the same period of 2022.
