Business License Requirement Repealed in Matanuska-Susitna Borough

PALMER — Businesses operating in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough soon will no longer be required to purchase and display a borough license. This change was approved by the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly in a unanimous vote on Tuesday. The repeal will go into effect as soon as the measure is signed by Borough Mayor Edna DeVries, an action expected to take place later this week.

This decision to repeal the business license requirement, which was first implemented in late 1995, means that businesses will no longer need to pay the $100 fee and renew their license every two years. It is important to note that businesses who paid for the license before the repeal vote will not be eligible for a refund, according to Borough Manager Mike Brown.

Despite this change, businesses in Alaska are still required to hold a state-issued license, which costs $50 annually. Additionally, businesses in the Mat-Su cities of Palmer, Wasilla, or Houston must carry a city-issued license, which has an annual fee of $25.

More than 10,000 entities currently hold borough business licenses, as reported by assembly member Stephanie Nowers. However, data collected from these registrations has not been utilized for economic development purposes in over 20 years, according to a memo accompanying the proposal.

The repeal is expected to result in a loss of approximately $541,000 in annual income from license fees. To mitigate this loss, borough officials plan to redirect business license staff to focus on grant applications to secure new sources of federal funding.

Furthermore, business registration information, previously used to communicate with local companies about regulatory changes and available programs, is redundant as similar data is already shared by the state, according to borough officials.

The proposal to repeal the business license requirement was supported by Borough Mayor Edna DeVries, as well as Assembly members Dee McKee and Rob Yundt.
