## Questioning FMLA Approval Process
I’ll try to keep this as short as possible but feel free to ask questions and I can elaborate. My main question is **Do you have to see the same doctor twice in order to get FMLA approved/ is it acceptable if you’ve seen multiple doctors but only one time each?**
I have a pituitary tumor (pituitary gland basically makes all of your hormones for your whole body). Because of this, I have seen my primary doctor, OB/ gynecologist, and endocrinologist doctor as they all are collaboratively treating my different symptoms all stemming from this tumor.
I’m a 28 year old female in the state of IL, I work at the local hospital for over 10 years now, the first ten years of my employment I had absolutely perfect attendance, I have never had any disciplinary action whatsoever.
In January of this year, I began getting very sick, got diagnosed with a pituitary tumor (the pituitary gland is just below your brain). This is still a very long process I’m in the middle of getting diagnosed with potential other tumors as well based on all of my abnormal hormones and lab values. I have also been hospitalized multiple times in the past month related to my tumor and abnormal labs as a secondary result of that.
As of now I do currently have approved intermittent FMLA. However, I have been trying to get it backdated to cover my call off points I accrued in the beginning before my FMLA was approved so that I do not get written up or fired. It took HR 3 weeks to look at my paperwork after I initially applied, then they denied it, kept denying it for over a month (while I was getting points for call offs again in the meantime) stating reason for denial was “has not been to the doctor twice in the last year”. I kept telling them I had been to the doctor three times in the last month, once to my gyne, once to my primary, and once to my endocrinologist, and I also signed releases for them to get all of these records.
They continued denying me, simply stating “has not been to the doctor twice in the last year”, I continued questioning them on this, then they said “well you have to see the SAME doctor at least twice”. I had a meeting with HR, my boss, and a union rep, we asked them to show us a law or policy stating it has to be the SAME doctor twice, they were not able to, we ended it in agreement to backdate it and remove the call off points I was given during the time they denied it. But today, they denied the back date again and are back to stating “I didn’t see the same doctor twice”.
