## My Dilemma with Child Support Services and Custody Concerns

I, a 30-year-old female, find myself in a tough situation regarding child support services and the father of my son. As a recipient of cash aid and food stamps, I was initially hesitant to provide information about my son’s father to Child Support Services. However, I eventually disclosed his details to them as I understood the importance of him contributing financially to support our child.

Now, I am second-guessing my decision and wondering if I have the option to prevent Child Support Services from contacting the father. I am concerned about the implications of him potentially seeking custody of our son. Despite the fact that he is not listed on the birth certificate and has minimal involvement in our son’s life, I am aware that he could legally pursue visitation rights.

In my apprehension, I am contemplating discontinuing my receipt of supportive services to avoid any further involvement from Child Support Services. It has been roughly a week since I divulged his information, and I am seeking guidance on whether ceasing all aid would prevent further contact.

Get off welfare and they will leave him alone. If you don’t cooperate, they will kick you off of it.

Nope. The government expects both parents to contribute and if you are getting aid, they expect dad to chip in too

Child Support professional here. Though I do not work in California. Generally speaking, if you cancel your state benefits they will stop pursuing the father. Also, most states have in place a “Good Cause” exemption . Meaning if it would be dangerous or unhealthy for the child for the state to pursue the father, they may let you continue to receive benefits and not go after the father. I generally use the “Good Cause” exemption in cases where the non-custodial parent has a documented history of drug use, gang activity, or violence.

Ok, you can’t. Even if you are to get off of cash , if you receive medical assistance, California enforces medical. So if you get medi-cal only, you can do a medical only order- put child support to $0.00 and have him provide medical at a reasonable cost, but that case remains open for enforcement.

You signed away your rights and gave them to the state when you signed all the documents for cash aid. Meaning you can’t negotiate the amount of a guideline or stipulation. Whatever the amount is, you have to agree to or go to court.

If you are in a situation where there is threat of violence, you can request good cause and not to cooperate. There is always an opt in option, but you have to have an order for child support to do that. And this is CA child support.
