**The Importance of Traditional News Media in Disseminating Science Information**

In the year 2023, it is essential to understand how people access information about science, particularly in the wake of the ever-growing influence of social media. Twenty years after the establishment of the Science Media Centre (SMC), we sought to analyze whether the traditional news media remains a vital source of science news for the public.

The SMC was founded in response to media frenzies about topics such as MMR, GM crops, and designer babies, with the aim of improving the coverage of contentious science stories by encouraging scientists to engage with journalists. As technology and communication methods have evolved significantly since then, it was important to reevaluate the role of traditional news outlets in shaping public perceptions of science.

To achieve this, we commissioned a poll of 2,337 adults aged 16 and over in Britain to determine the main sources of science information for the public. The results were surprising yet encouraging, with 73% of respondents citing traditional news outlets such as TV news, radio, and online news sites as their typical source of science information. This finding suggests that these outlets still play a significant role in delivering science news to the British public.

Furthermore, our survey showed that a considerable proportion of people access science information through social media, and notably, half of those who view science content on social media cited news media outlets as the original source. This indicates that traditional news media remains a primary influence on the science information disseminated through social platforms.

In an era where social media is omnipresent, our survey results challenge the notion that the traditional news media is no longer relevant in shaping public perceptions of science. Furthermore, the survey revealed that the majority of people trust science information from traditional news media outlets more than information from social media. This underscores the enduring significance and credibility of traditional news media in delivering accurate and reliable science news to the public.

In light of these findings, it is essential to recognize the continued importance of traditional news media in shaping public perceptions of science. Organizations such as the SMC play a crucial role in supporting and championing news journalism, especially in the realm of science reporting. Additionally, the results of our survey emphasize the need for all stakeholders, including the SMC and news outlets, to adapt to changing trends and continue to prioritize the provision of accurate and reliable science news to the public.
