# Traveling with Multiple Passports: My Experience with Scoot Airlines

Hello Internet strangers. I am an Australian resident who has both an Australian passport, and a British passport. My Australian passport had less than 6 months validity so I chose to book a trip to Vietnam with the intent of using my British passport.

## The Dilemma and Confusion

When I went to check in with scoot, I had an error message bounce back with “does not meet government guidelines” on the day of my departure, which sent me into a full spiral. Both smartraveller and the Australian embassy allege you should leave and enter Australia on your Australian passport, but do not specify or detail any circumstance where that is exempt.

I spent the whole day trying to get information from Scoot airlines, the Australian embassy, and the passport office (in case I had time to get an emergency passport in time). Scoot advised they have no authority and that the embassy decide, and the embassy sent me right back to Scoot.

## The Resolution and Lesson Learned

It was soon clear that at the check-in counter is when I’d know whether I’d be flying or not. The lady at the counter checked my British passport, then asked for my Australian passport before calling immigration. It took less than TWO minutes to approve with no issues, they just wanted to know. I will feel confident to do this again, however, only with a non-expired Australian passport.

I left Australia on my British, entered Singapore and then Vietnam on my British. I then re-entered Australia on my Australian and had no issues pop up. It would have been a different story trying to re-enter on my British passport as a visa is required and impossible to obtain as an existing Australian citizen.
