Her pain is over and mine continues on for a lifetime.

Allow them to make their own choices while offering support in rehabilitation choices, drives to NA meetings, counseling etc.

I have a tiny bit of experience with this. Because you are over 65 you have more options. Go to a local legal aid. Tell them you would like to file an emergency restraining order, they will do a temporary first but because of your age this will get him out of the house. This will be the fastest way to get him outfit he house. We did this with my father years ago in California. It took about a week before they got the guy out of his house.
IÔÇÖm surprised the police didnÔÇÖt arrest him for destroying your property. Damage to property is form of domestic abuse. He would at least be arrested on disorderly conduct. And then you can use that arrest in civil court to help getting your restraining order.
You might be able to have him involuntarily committed to a psychiatric facility. Parts of California recently passed some statute or something about involuntary commitment for people with drug problems. Went through this with my brother who was using heroin. My mom and I went to the courthouse to fill out a form and we thought that would work but because he wasn’t hurting us or hurting himself they said it wasn’t bad enough. Then called the police and they wouldn’t do anything for us because they legally couldn’t open his door if he had it shut. My mom had told him he had to leave by a certain date but he of course didn’t. Didn’t want to go to rehab but all of a sudden decided that he was going to since he had nowhere to go but he had to detox first. We lived with this for 7 years and it was so bad. He finally went to rehab and is now at a halfway house doing well! I’m sorry you have to go through this, it’s absolutely horrible.

File a TRO with your local courthouse. If you need assistance with filling the paperwork out contact a local non porfit that assist with dv court paperwork completion. That should move the police to engage more if the order is granted and he refuses to follow by the order.
