Getir, the popular grocery delivery app, has made a strategic decision to retract its European expansion plans, resulting in the unfortunate loss of approximately 1,500 jobs in the UK.

Sky News has learned that the Turkey-based company, known for its meaning “to bring” in Turkish, has managed to secure funding from investors to support its withdrawal from the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands. This move follows previous exits from countries like Italy and Spain, as Getir faced escalating losses due to its rapid expansion strategy.

This retreat will position Getir, once valued at $12 billion during the peak of pandemic-induced demand, as a company refocusing on its domestic market. Despite this restructuring, Getir has chosen to retain its US subsidiary FreshDirect, acquired just a few months ago.

While the exact number of job losses within the UK operations is yet to be confirmed by the company, it is estimated that around 1,500 employees, including warehouse workers, managers, and riders, will be affected.

Addressing the situation on Monday, Getir disclosed that its international operations were only contributing 7% to its overall revenues. The company also announced a recent investment round led by Mubadala and G Squared, stating that the funds would be utilized to strengthen its core food and grocery delivery services in Turkey.

As a parting note, Getir expressed gratitude for the dedication of all its employees in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and the US.
