## Dealing with Online Harassment and Defamation

I recently left a one-star Google review for the car dealership where I purchased my vehicle. In response, the dealership not only called my review fake but also posted my full address. Shortly after, I received a message on Facebook from a stranger threatening to come and see me. This situation feels like intimidation, and I’m unsure about the steps I can take to address it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I currently reside in New York.

## Seeking Legal Guidance and Protection

After consulting with a law enforcement officer, it became apparent that due to the nature of the online threats and absence of explicit bodily harm intent, immediate action may be limited. The stress and fear caused by this situation are understandable, but it’s essential to ensure that your rights are protected.

If you financed the car through the dealer or they arranged financing for you they are obligated to follow the [FTC Privacy Rule](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/ftcs-privacy-rule-auto-dealers-faqs). Report them to the FTC and they can be fined up to $50,000.

Is this a franchise? I would report this to corporate.

    Also: screen shot everything.

Contact the local police and get a legal consultation.  Using threats of violence or harassment to make someone do something could be considered blackmail.  Granted they may try to spin it off as “we meant we wanted to visit them to address their concerns”.

Can’t you flag the business page to Google for harassment or something similar.
Google doesn’t fuck around and taking down there business page would definitely get their attention to think twice as well as potentially getting your information removed from them I would think?

  • Loanreviewer

If they said your review is fake then how do they have your address? I mean I am not helping you with your issue but wouldn’t them posting your address make people realize that it’s not a fake review?

Get a lawyer and sue for invasion of privacy. Furthermore widely publicize the lawsuit in hopes that people will think twice from doing business with them.

Don’t take legal advice from cops. He probably doesn’t even understand the elements of defamation. He just wants this issue off his desk.

Something like this happened to me before.

Some telemarketer called me about insurance, and I decided to fuck around with him. At first it was the typical Indian accented man, but then after a few minutes he connected me to someone in the states. I realized this guy wasn’t a scammer, but an actual insurance guy. I spoke to him a bit then hung up. Less than 5 minutes. He called back, I answered and once he introduced himself, I hung up. A new phone number called me, I answered, and the guy on the other line said, “I know where you live.” I looked up this number, and it was the insurance salesman’s personal number. I looked him up further, and learned where he lived, where his kids went to school, when where his wife worked. I called him back, and left a message about sending threats with his personal phone number. How it’s very easy to find out everything about him.

Have you considered going to a local news station? They usually do a segment that details some kind of local grievances with shady companies. I bet they would be very interested in how this car dealership is doing business. Just a thought.

  • UserErrorOccurred

Get a lawyer and issue a takedown notice to the dealership and the review site.

  • Refflet

Defamation probably isn’t worth considering. Even if you did have actionable damages, defamation suits are almost always a drawn out and very expensive process.

A restraining order might be a good shout, though. It wouldn’t hurt to get a free consultation with a local lawyer.
