    They cannot do it – they should refund you in actual money, not a voucher. If they make it impossible to be refunded, they are obviously violating that rule.

    That said – what they can do in theory, and what enforcement will actually force them to do, can be very different. It’s very much legal for them to “try it on”, anyway, and only compensate you if you complain loud enough. 

    You will need to exhaust their complaints/appeal process, than check if they are signed up to an arbitration scheme, and go ahead with the arbitrator or, lacking that, a small claims court. Good luck.

    First question: Did you book directly with the airline, or were you booking via a 3rd party website that was placing the booking on your behalf?

    When is your original flight and how long before this did they cancel (i.e. how much notice)

    EU Regulation 261/2004 says that they should inform you minimum 14 days before departure

    if it’s within the airline’s control (like a technical issue and not a volcano) then you might also be entitled to compensation

    you are legally entitled to a refund or a replacement flight

    iirc the replacement should be similar times (if your replacement delays your arrival by more than 2 hours, say it’s the next day)

    TL;DR contact airline and say that you are entitled to either a full refund (not credits) or a replacement flight – these are your basic legal rights here

    tell skyscanner what happened and they will also investigate on your behalf and fully hold them to account. i got screwed out of £1700 just like this and the airline pulled the same trick offering a voucher . skyscanner we’re all over it like a rash and got me the cash money refund. it took ages but i got it .

    With regards to the plane tickets and IBAN nonsense. Just report the purchase to your credit card company as service paid for is not provided. No idea what you could do about the other holiday arrangements you may have spent on.

    I also had issues with Wizz Air where they moved my flights twice. I couldn’t find anywhere on their site that gave the option of money back. The only options seemed to be Wizz vouchers (at a rate of 120% of the fare, i think) or free rebooking.

    I took the free rebooking both times as they were the only airline flying my route.

    If you paid by credit card, then you may be able to get a refund through section 75. It might be easier than arguing with the airline.

    Within 14 days to flight they can’t just refund, beyond that they can. I’m sure if you speak to a real person they can refund to card without IBAN. Failing that, contact your card issuer to do a chargeback

    Technically credit cards do have an account attached for transaction processing – might be worth asking your card issuer whether they can give you IBAN for that account, could save you some hassle.

    If it’s wizzair I had a similar issue. I had to request a voucher for the cancellation and then convert the voucher back into credit on my card. No idea why they do this process but hope it helps!

    Worth speaking to your bank about a section 75 claim and whether the other holiday costs can be considered a consequential loss.

    Talk to your credit card people they will apply pressure to refund and if the airline doesnt, they can issue a charge back.

    Not an expert but if flights were booked with an EU airline and especially if they were to an EU destination you may well also have recourse under EU law. Definitely check.

    How recently is “recently”? You may be able to contact your bank and put a stop on the credit card payment. In effect they simply won’t get paid. You can then inform them that you don’t need the credits and the matter has been resolved.

    They can then bluster all they like, but they admit the service wasn’t delivered, and that’s that.

    Did you get a booking confirmation, and how long between the booking and the cancellation? Presumably you mean that your booking was cancelled and not the flight itself
