Understanding the Veteran Readiness and Employment (VRE) Program
Many individuals often inquire about the VRE program without fully grasping its purpose and how to navigate the application process. It is crucial to comprehend the program’s objectives and requirements to maximize its benefits.
TD:LR – VRE entails significant effort and dedication. Success hinges on thorough research even prior to submitting an application. If this level of commitment seems daunting, it is advisable to reevaluate your decision to avoid wasting time.
Delving into the intricacies of VRE reveals its transformative potential for individuals with a service rating. However, a fundamental concept must be internalized:
VRE focuses on FACILITATING YOUR RETURN TO EMPLOYMENT.
The program, officially known as Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E), emphasizes practical employment opportunities rather than fulfilling childhood aspirations. The primary goal is to equip participants with relevant skills and knowledge to reenter the workforce and contribute meaningfully to society and the economy.
It is essential to emphasize this point:
If your ambition was to work as an Orca trainer at Seaworld, but logistical constraints or educational limitations hinder that pursuit, a pragmatic redirection is imperative. For instance, aspiring to argue cases in the Supreme Court with a sixth-grade reading level is unrealistic. VRE aims to guide individuals towards a viable career path aligned with their abilities and the demands of the contemporary job market.
As the program necessitates introspection and strategic planning, an initial exercise in career assessment is essential.
Three critical components demand meticulous exploration and evaluation to initiate this journey:
Understanding Yourself
- Self-Reflection: Evaluate your personality traits, preferences, strengths, weaknesses, values, and their origins. How does your service-related impediment affect your employability?
This phase necessitates profound introspection to ascertain your intrinsic qualities and their relevance to the job market. By understanding how your personality traits influence your professional trajectory, you can discern the ideal job roles and organizational environments suited to your disposition.
If you encounter difficulties in this exercise, questioning your career readiness is pivotal. VRE demands active engagement and self-awareness to ascertain your eligibility and commitment.
Understanding the Economic Environment
- Career Exploration: Identify potential job roles, their geographical prevalence, remuneration structures, physical and mental demands, requisite skills, and entry pathways.
Building upon your self-awareness, this phase involves aligning your skill set and preferences with practical employment options. Realistic expectations regarding job availability, salary prospects, and geographic constraints are crucial considerations in shaping your career trajectory.
Moreover, comprehending the industry entry requirements and expectations is pivotal. For instance, pursuing a career in a specific field may necessitate relocation or specialized training, necessitating a comprehensive research approach.
Understanding the Job
- Skill Assessment: Evaluate your current skills, assess the job requirements, identify skill gaps, and devise a strategy for acquiring necessary competencies.
Engaging with industry professionals and leveraging informational interviews can provide valuable insights into the job landscape, skill demands, and learning pathways. Collaborating with industry experts enables you to bridge skill gaps and enhance your employability.
Furthermore, addressing personal challenges such as anxiety through therapy and medication underscores the program’s commitment to holistic support. Overcoming obstacles and enhancing your readiness for employment are integral aspects of the VRE journey.
As you navigate this preparatory phase, envisioning your career goals and the requisite steps becomes paramount. You must acknowledge the realities of your chosen profession, prepare for inevitable challenges, and commit to a proactive approach towards achieving your employment objectives.
By integrating these insights into your VRE application process, you position yourself as a well-informed and motivated candidate poised for success. Your proactive approach enables you to articulate your career aspirations, align them with industry demands, and navigate the transition back to the workforce effectively.

🤣 “if you have a 6th grade reading level you are not about to go to law school.” In a more serious note before applying for VRE I had a 6th grade math level and I’m one semester away from a bachelors in accounting.
The woman helping me into the program was nearly in tears on out last call cuz the dickbag before couldn’t understand why she couldn’t just push him through for a Gen ed degree and was ripping into her. She has been incredible and putting all the packages together has been a task but you are right, it’s a whole other mindset.
I appreciate this. I was initially denied. Then I did research and was “verbally approved” but the counselor hasn’t done anything to get me a plan together. Does anyone have information on who to contact. He told me that his superior told him if he is ok with me doing it and talks to me about the job and I understand what I will deal with then he can go ahead and approve it. I have 20% rating for shoulders and I want to do radiology. I’m already in my program cuz I just started May 13. I applied for VR&E back in December and was found eligible. I met my counselor in January. He verbally denied me in end of April based on my shoulders and at that time I told him about EVERYTHING I could do as an Xray tech. I also sent job openings that doesn’t necessarily require me to do all that lifting and at least not for a long time. He then said he would talk to his supervisor on my behalf. Met up the week before school started and he told me I was good but he had to write up some stuff and we need to meet in 2 weeks. That time came and he said the supervisor pushed it back saying he needs to fix something. I’m at the point where I need to speak to someone else. How do we reach the supervisor? I’m fortunate enough to get my books from the ILL (InterLibrary Loan) program and sign a 60 day tuition deferment. This is hard tho and pretty scary trying to get this guy to do his job. I don’t need to be working and need everything processed. I don’t trust the counselor. He has told me he saw stuff a day before our appointment. He doesn’t even remember our convo some times. I just feel like he BS’ing and hopes I go away. I don’t even believe I’m approved even though that’s the last thing he said. Any tips on how to reach a supervisor??
I was approved 4 months ago. Unfortunately, my counselor is absent. Does not respond to emails from me or the educational institution that I am interested in attending. I tried contacting the supervisor and got the same treatment. Crickets. Very frustrating as I am about out of money and nowhere to turn to get answers.
Thanks for this post. I hope people read it.
This is a GREAT guide! I hope a mod pins it.
💯🔥 also watch nic the vet on yt my fellow vets she breaks VR&E down in series ‼️
Stopped reading after VR&E is a “shit load” of work. No it’s not, it’s not that hard
It’s weird how some people view it as on demand education benefits vs transitioning because of a sc disability.
One thing you missed is that it can be frustrating dealing with professors and extremely naive students who will 100% resent you bc they work full time and have student loans. Don’t think you’re going to be having Applebee’s meltdowns all over the place and have it work out for you. You should be open to campus vet organizations, social work and counseling services provided in tuition, adhd study tips, every day emotions, etc… It might sound really basic and dumb, but as OP always comes back to it’s about rethinking things so be open to it to get back to work.
Nice write up!
This is a fantastic breakdown of VR&E. I love it. Thanks for sharing. How do I bookmark this? 😄
Good luck actually getting in touch with someone when you have an issue. No one will answer, no one will help. I called every number there is they just stop answering you. The 1-800 number for benefits says he gets 15 of those calls a day and they cant help. So if you use VR&E good luck!
Being patient is key. Ask to switch reps if you aren’t getting the feedback you need. I had a horrible representative that wouldn’t respond. I had to contact higher to get a response. I ended up giving up because they weren’t helpful. I asked for a new rep but kept getting ignored.
Good luck with self-employment track. I tried and was immediately discarded saying they never had anyone approved for that track and most of the time they get denied. Why have a self employment track if nobody can use it?
I immediately lost all confidence in the program. Be ready to jump through hoops and put out fires only to get subpar results.
Thanks for this!
Applied last weekend. Waiting on a counselor to contact me. This was good info
Yes NEVER mention education as your primary reason. Employment suitable for/with your disabilities is the reason and education is 1 of the tools to get you there. Researching the questions they will ask you and being prepared with tailored answers will get you there.
Finishing my MBA’s last class with it rn, my counselor told me they hardly ever approve mbas..
Great write up.
You forgot the part where some old crusty bitch denies you just because.
So I requested HLR, and now I’m in waiting hell for someone else to likely just deny it because the VA does not care about you or want to help you. Seems the only way through is drawing a decent human that might be employed at your regional office.
Did my homework, wrote up notes on keywords what to say and what not to say. Had a goal in mind, don’t have a BS or associates in what I want to get into and my current role doesnt suit my interests. Nor does it require any specialized skills.
Awesome.
I’m finishing up my 1st year of VRE. Shooting my shot for a mechanical engineering degree.
Who hurt you?
Well said.
Thank you!!!!

Can you elaborate on the self employment track.
Question: How can I go about getting a new representative. I really like the one I have now but she has 340 veterans on file and she is very busy and slow to respond. I’m in the Orlando FL area.
Outstanding breakdown.
Man,
That was well planned and thought out. I’m sure some veterans will take advantage of that chicken bone you just threw at them!!
This is a great post actually. So many people use it to try and get free stuff or advance a hobby but that is not what it’s for.
I’m using VRE to pay for law school rn. AMA
