    Would a reasonable person feel that the additional work is within your scope or role? Ie. you’re not an IT PM being asked to perform janitorial duties or an admin being asked to do PM duties?

    Make yourself a schedule for the week with approximate hours for different kinds of work. Get a daily 5-minute check-in with your manager and a weekly 20-minute meeting.

    “Hello Manager, these were the tasks we agreed on last week. As discussed I dropped Tasks A and B so I could focus on Task C instead but otherwise my work pretty much matched the schedule. This is my schedule for this week, including A and B from last week. I’ve put in the basics but I’m not sure how to prioritize Tasks D–M. They look like they’ll total at least sixty hours. Which ones are most important for the business to get done right away?”

    I was in this same position and the way I got out of it was by moving to a different department that had a clearer job description. In my previous role I constantly got work dumped on me that was above my pay grade, but because the job description was unclear I couldn’t really push back, other than saying that certain tasks were too time consuming to complete within my work hours. I feel for you because it’s a tough position to be in, but really the only way out is to get a different job. Jobs with unclear job descriptions are made that way intentionally because the higher ups want someone that can be a “catch all” when other people don’t have time to complete tasks

    Your job description outlines what you are responsible to do within the work hours that you are paid for. If the employer adds “other duties” that you are able to complete within your work hours, then that would fall within the category of “other duties as assigned”. If your employer is assigning “other duties” that result in you doing unpaid overtime to complete all your assignments, then that’s your boundary.

    Obviously being able to more work in the same amount of time makes you more valuable. Sadly, your current employer may not see that value nearly as much as other employers…

    This is one way to get much more experience to then leverage for your next job. They don’t seem to really care about you or are hearing you when you bring it up so you need to turn it into an opportunity for yourself. If you know what you should be getting, then add what the new skills/experience you are gaining should pay, that’s the salary you go for in your next job. They don’t have to know what you earn now.

    I doubled my salary by first being underpaid, learning whatever I could and then going for a higher position in another company. They presumed I was making a lot more, had trouble finding someone for the position they needed filled quickly and I came along. Decide if there’s anything more you can learn where you are now to help get you the step up that you’ll need in your career and if not, start looking for a next level position elsewhere. The culture where you are now won’t get better anytime soon so start making it work for you by planning you’re leave this year or next.

    Only take work from your direct boss. Send everyone who wants something to your boss if it is not in your contract.

    Did you get asked to cover for your coworker? If so you cant take on extra work

    I think this has more to do with the value of the work you do and not your employment contract. Many contracts have a qualifier like the one in your contract. At this stage it is a negotiation. If you think you are undervalued then you can look for something else.

    Legal?? Of course its legal. If you don’t like it move on but its certainly not illegal.

    They are not legally obligated to give you a raise just because you are doing more work. There are no boundaries with “other duties as assigned” provided they are not unsafe for you to do, or cause you to work an excessive amount of hours. They can keep you as busy as they want at your base pay.

    I’m of the opinion that I do whatever the boss asks. If he asked me to drive him to the airport at 4am, done. I am not a volunteer. I work 8 hours then OT. Don’t care when my day starts.

    At one point in my life, I felt like I was worth more. Asked the boss, he said no. I applied elsewhere and got a better paying job.

    The new boss is more of the same. Asks me to do stuff and I do it.

    The old boss said no because it would have cut into his money for paying for his boat and cabin. I have no problem with that. One day I would like a boat and cabin too and wouldn’t pay more for some employe just because they ask.

    A couple years ago I started my own business and I’m making way less than ever. But that will change too, hopefully.

    Do the job or don’t. Like the money or don’t. It’s up to you to change your environment. This isn’t supposed to be negative or motivational. It’s just facts. At the end of your life you don’t get a redo.
