# Dealing with Social Security after the Passing of Parents

Hey everyone, I hope you’re doing well. I wanted to share an update on my situation regarding my parents’ passing and the social security benefits I am entitled to. My father passed away in August 2020, which led to me starting to receive social security benefits. Unfortunately, my mother also passed away in May of last year. I didn’t take any action regarding the social security benefits until a month before I turned 18, which was on Feb 2 of this year. I have to mail in some paperwork to claim my backpay.

The backpay payments stopped when my mother passed away, as she was my guardian at the time and I was 17. Now that I am turning 18 and have received a job offer in Tennessee that I simply can’t turn down due to the substantial amount of money involved, I am faced with a dilemma. If I decide to drop out of the process of claiming the backpay, will I still be eligible to receive it in the future? Or will I risk losing it altogether?

    Sorry for your losses.

You will still be paid for any past benefits you are owed – even if you are not owed for any ongoing benefits.

However, if you are talking about dropping out of high school, I urge you to seriously consider it because it is going to limit the jobs you can get for the rest of your life if you do not have a high school diploma.

And if you do drop out of high school, GET YOUR GED! It is not going to be easier to take GED classes or study for the GED test as you get older. Your life will get even busier with a spouse/significant other, potentially kids etc.

(If it is college, you can always go back if you decide you want a degree.)
