I don’t disagree with the premise, but many of these things are taught.

Eg, compound interest. At least part of the issue is that teenagers just don’t care or apply the lessons.

It would be nice for the schools to teach basics mainly for the kids who have parents that don’t believe in sharing or are bad at money management. My wife and I agree to keep our finances open to our kids and discuss our money management so they get experience and are better equipped to deal with it when they are on there own.

Both of our parents wouldn’t discuss money in the family and they make poor choices on top of that so we both decided to live a more conservative life style and share our experience hoping our kids have a better chance.

Most things that may be interesting when you are 30 and paying your own bills just are not interesting to teenagers living at home with a weekly allowance. I know I wish I had paid more attention in “shop” class and learned how to change my own oil, etc., but I was 16 and didn’t really care. If I had been taught about compound interest and how to do my taxes, I wouldn’t have cared and wouldn’t have retained information.

I think the thing that really needs to be taught in schools is how to think critically. If you learn to think critically, you can apply those skills to a variety of applications, including how to manage money.

Hey All! I wrote this post the other day discussing the need for more financial education in our school systems (focusing on the U.S.). I generally had to teach myself in my mid-twenties and it’s amazing to think what a leg-up everyone could have with some courses in high school or in first or second year of college.

What do you think about finances being a core part of our education system?

The schools already teach math, reading and how to find information.

I donÔÇÖt believe itÔÇÖs the states responsibility to be teaching money habits.
