National Small Business Week: Importance of Supporting Small Businesses

National Small Business Week is a significant event that runs from April 28 to May 4 each year. As an owner of a small business for almost 25 years and the chair of the Grand Island Chamber, I want to emphasize the vital role our small business community plays in the economy.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, Nebraska is home to 181,742 small businesses, making up 99% of all businesses in the state. These small businesses are responsible for about half of Nebraska’s total employment.

Despite the crucial role small businesses play, they often face significant challenges. Studies show that approximately one in five new businesses fail within the first two years, and 65% fail within their first decade.

Owning a small business is no easy feat, as I’ve learned firsthand over the years. This highlights the importance of supporting and uplifting our small business community.

My Story: Journey as a Small-Business Owner

My entrepreneurial journey began at Grand Island Senior High in the late 1980s, where my passion for industrial arts was ignited. Thanks to the guidance of my teacher, Dave Klimek, I delved into the world of metal manufacturing and pursued further education at Southeast Community College.

After graduating from SCC’s tool and die program in 1990, I joined Dramco Tool Co. as a full-time toolmaker. Through hard work and dedication, I progressed to roles such as lead toolmaker, tool designer, and eventually, a business manager.

By my early 30s, I had the opportunity to become a co-owner of Dramco Tool Co. Today, with over 34 years of experience in the industry, I’ve witnessed the highs and lows of business ownership, always striving to improve and adapt.

My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to prioritize customer service, surround yourself with talented individuals, and embrace the challenges of owning a business. Building strong community connections and offering support can also strengthen your business’s foundation.

Assistance for Small Businesses: Resources and Support

To support budding entrepreneurs, the Grand Island Chamber and the Central Community College Entrepreneurship Center have developed a comprehensive 10-step checklist for starting a small business. This resource serves as a practical guide for new business owners.

For personalized assistance and guidance, the CCC Entrepreneurship Center offers a range of services, including business planning and coaching. Collaborating with these organizations can enhance the success rate of startups and small businesses.

Additionally, the Chamber’s “Look Local, Grow Local” initiative encourages community members to support local businesses. Businesses interested in displaying a “Look Local, Grow Local” decal can obtain one from the Chamber’s office in Grand Island.

By embracing and patronizing small businesses not just during National Small Business Week but throughout the year, we can strengthen our local economy and foster a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem.
