    You need to find a new job, your working for free every shift by staying back, casuals get paid for any work overtime.

    Sounds like a cowboy business who runs their own rules, I wouldn’t want to work in that toxic workplace in the long run tbh.

    The lesson to be learned is that if you are going to be two minutes late, stop and have a coffee or something and arrive 30 minutes late.

    Don’t bend over backwards for a company that can easily replace you. And the fact your boss has downplayed the way the manager behaved over being late once… is a big ol red flag.

    They’re either looking for a reason to fire you or pushing you to quit. Stop doing all the extra work. You work within your hours that they pay you for. You’re also casual so you can up and leave whenever you feel like it but I would advise giving a week or two notice.

    I personally wouldn’t because it’s pretty obvious they don’t value you as an employee and are abusing your good nature/dedication to the job, time to find a new job.

    this is a swings and roundabouts situation where undoubtably the employer gets more free work from you than you get from coming in 2 minutes late.

    Yes. They can probably dock you 2 minutes. Not 30 minutes. But the question is, Do they pay you 2 minutes pay when you work the extra 2 minutes.

    As a casual you shouldn’t be working for free at all. If you’re doing that on your own without being told to by management then there’s nothing you can really do about that. If it’s an expectation and they’ve told you that you have to be staying then that’s a bit different and you’d need to collect up as much evidence as possible and consider making a fair work claim but it will take a long time and effort to sort.

    As for the lost wages it is now a criminal offence in QLD for wage theft and you can report it to the police. If they’re docking your wages illegally on days you weren’t late then that’s not on. Again you’ll need as much evidence as possible. Perhaps talk to officers at your local station about what you can do and what your potential next steps would be or make a report online.

    Honestly get out of there and find another job that isn’t as toxic. This sounds like a depressing place to work and there’s plenty of jobs out there atm without having to put up with this bullshit.

    Sometimes working for small ‘family owned’ businesses is shit, and they either don’t play by the rules or don’t know them. You wouldn’t be treated like this at a big corporate business. Time to move on and get a new job, that workplace sounds toxic af.

    It’s a criminal offence in QLD, so could be large fines. I would start with fair work. If it’s a regular thing and other employees have the same issue, you can look at getting a lawyer involved.

    Other option is to go get another job.

    No, they can’t. Also wage theft if you have to “stay back” to “finish your tasks”. Not your problem they have more work than you can do in a shift.

    STOP staying back, “finishing a task” is not your responsibility if it can’t be done within the given timeframe. Also what if you injure yourself in this period? I *guarantee* they’d try to say “well officially you weren’t on the clock so you aren’t covered” or some such nonsense (which doesn’t wash at all btw). This is wage theft. If they’re happy to give you 30min OT to finish, then it’s up to you, but STOP WORKING FOR FREE, this is where the saying “Don’t set yourself on fire to keep other people warm” applies. They can afford to pay you more than you can afford to be ripped off. Think of it like they’re paying you for the extra 30min a day, and then at the end of the week, you give them back the earnings of each extra 30 min “just because”. Does that sound sane and reasonable? What’s happening is even worse because you aren’t even paid the extra in the first place. “Family businesses” are often the worst by a mile too, always expecting extra for nothing.

    Tell them you asked Fair Trading and they said it wasn’t legal to be docked 30 min for 2 minutes late, watch them shit themselves.

    It’s not legal and the next time they say that, put your stuff down and go sit down somewhere and scroll through your phone. When they ask why you aren’t working tell them if you aren’t being paid you aren’t working. Then when they crack it more ask them if they are trying to have you work unpaid in blatant disregard of labour laws. Maybe you will Sue maybe you won’t ask if they are willing to find out. Then start looking for a new job and document everything.

    Contrarian view point: Calling fair work, documenting and demanding pay for every millisecond: all that minutia is playing small minded games and is the practice of small minded people. This includes your manager. It wastes your time and supports a retaliatory mindset that itself is inherently toxic to yourself. You know your worth. Send them, including the boss, an email explaining what you have here. Tell them bus being late is beyond your control and there are no other practical alternatives, but you have stayed back to sort everything, explain you are a team player and if that’s not good enough for them then it’s a poor fit and you’ll be moving along. You’ve been there 5 years so there must be some upside to this job. If not, start applying for other jobs immediately. Stand up for your worth. Rather use that time and effort to improve/work up alternatives. Don’t let it bother you. With the correct attitude you’ll be in a better position than this manager in comparatively no time and also more sane.

    I always work the time I’m late unless i get sent home early. Never had issues because they round up or down to the nearest 15 minutes so if I work say 8-4 but start at 8:04 and end 4:04 then it gets rounded to 8-4.

    Find a new job asap. It is not legal to dock pay or not pay you if you stay late. I’d report them to Fair Work as well for it and get back paid.
